oh no my tank just cracked.
what to do how to prepare for it
first thing.
panic. your in a world of hurt and the next 4 hours are going to be wet and sleepless.

items to help you on your way:
1)several large rubber maid storage bins to transfer all of your live stock into,
2)a handful of small heaters and power heads depending on your tanks size and how many storage bins you use.
3)carpet steam cleaner or a wet dry vac

helpful ideas:
if you buy all of the same size bins you can stack them up and put a few extra pumps in one for this emergency.
prepare for this before it happens. sometimes walmart might be out of bins.

oh no my display tank is covered in ich

well you should have prevented this with a QT set up previous to this disaster. but now that its happened and your in the learn from your own mistakes not everyone elses frame of mind.

id set up 2 QT tanks in addition to a tank used for fresh water dips / copper treatments.
the first QT tank will house fish that have not been treated
the second will house after they have been treated.

your going to want to keep your tank fishless for 6-8 weeks to hopefully rid the parasite of any hosts, but this could still be an infested environment.

oh no my skimmer just broke.

well this piece of equipment is one of the lifebloods of the hobby.
however there was a time when skimmers weren't all that popular.
heres some ideas to keep your tank alive until you can replace it or repair it
1) run carbon
2) weekly water changes 20%
3) cut your feeding back some. less food less poop.
chances are your skimmer is fine, and its just the pump that is broken. you might be able to jury rig a mj1200 with a venturi set up if its just a broken pump to hold you over until your new gen-x NW pump arrives.

oh no my water is electrocuting me again
chances are its a heater, unplug it and see if you still get zapped.
if your still getting zapped. go through your equipment one by one unplugging and replugging with your kids .. er i mean wifes.. er i mean your hand in the tank... =P

oh no my favorite fish has vanished
if your newest addition to your tank is a s. haddoni ( carpet anemone ) chances are it ate it.
other wise check your overflow box, skimmer. fuge. plumping (to include half closed ball valves that seem to be clogged ) fat starfish , clams , crabs or mantis shrimps.

my ammonia is through the roof!
do you have a roommate who peed in your tank?
if not maybe a fish died or a cucumber died somewhere ( in your plumbing where you cant see it? )
anyways amquel is a must or some other form of ammonia neutralizing substance. this 10 dollar bottle can save you lots of heart ache. however if the dead animal is still "off gassing" ammonia it will eventually need to be found and removed. ( the same with a mean roommate ) water changes (20 - 25 %) and carbon are also lifesavers

feel free to chime in here sk8r !!! along with everyone else add your own prepare for the worst problems and solutions .

hope this helps
