my condy anenome ate my copperband butterfly! i heard they weren't good for reef tanks. is this typical of the condy? i only fed it about once a month. but it ate the whole thing at once!
 
after some thought, i have decided that the rock the anenome is on is worth more than he is, and i will probably kill him. i know its not reef friendly but i have to look at it from an investment point of view. sorry fella
 
Mine ate my gold-stripe, I would never suggest anyone to purchase a condy for any of there tanks, take it back to the lfs, don't butcher the thing, it's normal for them. Too bad LFS don't try and express this to any of there customers, they're just trying to make a buck...

Please try to pry him off as gently as possible - I've done this with Condy's before... it is VERY easy once you get under the foot... just go slow and think of it as if you are peeling up a sticker or something.

give him back to the LFS or to a friend... etc. No sense in killing it just because you are done with it.

he was in the 2-3 inch range, i just got it about a month ago. the problem with trying to pry the anenome off is that he is in a hole in the rock that goes down to the center. the rock is pretty good size and i cant get to his foot. he is able to retract all the way w/in the rock where you cant see him anymore. it took him a whole day to swallow that fish haha i'd trade him in at the lfs but i cant get him out of the rock and they dont give credit for rock.
 
alright, i cant bring myself to kill something i worked so hard raising so i'll trade him in... thanks for the motivation guys...

My condi ate 2 clowns before I found out what was going on, I saw him eating the third. I gave him to a LFS, with the rock and was glad to see the back end of him.

I'd try a diff. LFS ... but if that's not an option.. Turn the rock upside down or stick a powerhead in it's face. If the Condy can't get the light/flow it wants - it'll crawl out. When they are on the move you can all but pick them up off the rock with your hand.

Condylactus anemones typically don't "eat" healthy fish. I suspect that the fish was either dead or sick and the anemone was simply cleaning up. A month is about the average life-span for most copperbanded buttlerflyfish in captivity.
 
yeah, he wasnt looking too healthy but i was atleast going to trade in the copperband, now i can't... so i wont be gettin another one of those for a while. i noticed the anenome was getting pretty strong though, it actually stung me when i put my hand in there and before it never did that. ( it tried, just never hurt)
 
so you were going to kill an anemone for doing what comes naturally to the creature.

That is a weak way to approach this hobby. But maybe I misread as I came into this thread because I thought the title was oh no! dong candy.

I was just kinda curious as to what dong candy was.
 
I feel your pain. Always research before you buy...or as soon as you get home with that impulse buy!
I had a Long Tentecaled Anemone eat my Flame Angel!!!
