I think the doser switch is OK actually. I might have been confused because it is working fine now. The skimmer is doing well. I closed the output valve a bit and had a nice over-skim event. :D I still don't have a particularly good head on it but I know at least I can wet skim like a maniac! When I closed the valve it ended up looking a lot like the old neck but with more rapid movement so I am sure I will get it dialed in.

One problem is that at least one of the stones is blowing air into the exit hole (uni-seal) so I am occassionally getting a massive gurgle in the outbound tube. Doesn't affect the skimmer body though but it is a bit disturbing to hear.

hehehe...so whatever event happened to shut down and back fill my air pump just happened again. I was hanging out in the tank room minding my own business when all of a sudden that DC4HD shut down. I couldn't manually over-ride either. The only thing that would bring that stuff back online was a system restart on the ACIII pro. I sent Curt a message to see if he has any ideas. At least this time I had the air hose up high enough!

I just entered my code for the stirrer as:

OSC 05/240 ON/OFF Then STR& ON

Not sure if this will work so I will keep an eye on it. Now to trouble shoot that doser...

So the doser problem seems to be fixed. I switched out hoses and no more bubbles. All is going according to lack of plan. :D Skimmer is still not dialed in but it is promising. A little more touchy with the extra air!

Some people may be interested to see my ACIII Pro code. I am no expert but it seems to work well.

quick evening update

quick evening update

Just got in 20 more peppermint shrimp and with the 10 in the fuge I now have 30 total. I acclimated the 20 and put them in the display to see how they fare. I am keeping the 10 in the fuge as back-up and to make sure that I have a supply. Has anyone had any success with peppermint shrimp breeding in their system?

Oh yeah, and the skimmer is producing nice skimmate after I decided to leave it alone for 24 hours. :)

my shrimp breed and I got larve, but my system is way too small to support growth. You may have better luck with your size. I have a vid of the larve on my website.

Cool. So there definitely is a chance that they will breed. Then they would drop down into the main...I love it when a plan comes together! :D

A pretty good chance they'll breed (successful fertilized eggs), but it is a very low chance (pretty much zero) that the hatched shrimp will survive in a "reef tank", too many predators and not enough food.

The good news is that if you want to raise the babies, there are many articles and books out on how to do it in dedicated tanks.

Well I think there is a much higher probability of success in my fuge since it has a passive overflow. I could even net the overflow to keep them from migrating to the display.

Update: GOT A PURPLE LTA!!! Pics later...

Purple LTA is done acclimating but I can't get it to let go of the acclimation pitcher...I have it suspended in the display but I really don't know how to resolve this.

I think nearly Dr. Plankis' idea to swish the cheato is working well. I removed an 18qt. bucket load today and did the swish. I feel like I may be missing some but I also noticed many more almost microscopic snail babies in the bucket so I am getting ones I wouldn't ordinarily see. There are a bazillion of them.

I also note for the third time in about 2 weeks that there have been baby shrimp in the cheato as well. I really don't know what they are but they appear to be a lot like mysis. Tonight I got 2 so there definitely is some shrimp breeding going on in there already. :)

Good luck with the LTA!!!!! I'm going to the Hawks game on Sunday but if you're not busy Saturday lets do something even if it's wrong!

hehehe...good news! I followed your instructions and it came out fairly easily. I left it on the sand bed up against a rock and away from corals. It puffed up and started to attach to the rock. If my glass was see-though, I would snap a pic!

Me do something "wrong"??? Please...I am going to Hat Island for a pirate weekend so I will be gone. I am helping a friend with his son's B-day and we are burying a treasure chest filled with chocolate coins out on the beach. We have all sorts of priate props and if you haven't noticed, I haven't shaved or bathed in a few days. :D There's going to be blood, bugs and a whole lot of muck if the 5 boys want to find that chest.

And I am bring enough Jolly Roger to kill a horse. If I get back, I'll call you. And enjoy the game!!

Well the purple LTA made it through the night nicely and today it looks great. Unfortunately, as is often the case in my system, it has wedged itself between 2 rocks and I cannot get a good picture of it. It has excellent color but is tickling a clam so I am not sure what that will bring. The clam doesn't seem to mind though.

I did spot one of the peppermint shrimp today, so at least that one is still alive! :D The one yellow tang is AWOL as is the lawnmower blenny. Maybe the PLTA had a little snack last night???

Anyone know why a branching hammer might have a large tissue bubble in the center? It is extremely thin walled so almost transparent. I have never seen this before...

Once I heard that is what they do when the splitting/growing/auto-fragmentation process begins.

I could be wrong though, no expert here.

OK...

Nitrate 0 (Salifert)
Phosphate 0 (SeaChem)
Magnesium 1475ppm (Salifert)
Ca 425ppm (SeaChem)
Alk 13.8 dKh (Salifert)

Looks like my Multi-Media reactor and kalk top-off are working together nicely. And I don't dose Mg...it's in the salt!

How about some pics?

Purple LTA introduced last night.
