Interesting. I haven't had anything like this happen with my GBTAs but I am just curious what the mechanism is that makes this happen. I wonder if the clown is nipping at it to get used to the sting?

Yeah, clams unfortunately go FAST! When mine developed minched mantle it was completely gone by the next day.

If you have a Coral Banded Shrimp, they are known to cut off tentacles which will float away into the reef. Those tentacles will not survive, ime.

Sorry about your clam. I doubt it had anything to do with the snail.

I don't have a coral banded shrimp, but I do have cleaners, peppermints, and mythrax. I have seen the female maroon suckling on the GBTAs in the past so maybe she got too excited and bit a n-i-p-p-l-e or two off by accident. ;) The PLTA has moved again and now is in the center of the tank next to another return nozzle.

I have no idea about the clam of course, but that snail got very large and was casting quite a web over the clam. It just seems that I would have seen some distress earlier if it was the snail. I did pick off about 10 smaller vermetids from its shell too. I would bet that there is no trace of it when the lights come on today.

OK, so as expected the clam didn't make it. It is now being torn up by tangs and shrimp. I may pull it and chop it up, but I am not sure I want to encourage the fish to eat clams.

I pulled 212 DIBS Turbo sp. out of about 1.5g of chaeto today and popped them into the grow-out tank. I also got 4 mysis...my fuge is quite the hopping pad! :D

Always good to have a little hop in you pad:)

Aaaaaand...the clam is gone. Oh well.

I notice two fo my tear-drop clams seem to be a bit clamped as well. Not sure what the issue is, if there is one. Tested the water toady and all looks good, but my salinity is down to 1.025.5 which is a bit lower than I usually keep it. Generally it is between 1.026 and 1.027 and I know that clams liek a bit richer salinity, so that may be the problem.

Spent some time in the tank room tonight sampling beers with Sherman. He remarked about the snails and as we talked and watched the reef, we came to realize that my population of DIBS snails has exploded.

The DIBS Turbo sp. and the Columbelid sp. have grown to huge numbers. Keep in mind that I have over 750 lbs. of rock and we noted tonight that it is covered in baby snails. So is the galss. I estimate the population to be in the many thousands if not tens of thousands. I will have to start exporting them soon! We saw hundreds of the columbellids on the glass tonight...so, what now Brian??? :D

I can certainly vouch for the snail population. Those little guys are everywhere in there! :D Must be a hundred per foot of rock? Did you find out the name of the ones that were on the back glass? Those guys were going to town in there! Thanks for the hospitality! (Once again!)

I would think that the population of snails such as those would reach a high point and then find a bit of a symbiotic level. Just my guess though:)

Good guess! The snails will eventually reach a balanced population based on the carrying capacity of the tank and standard juvenile mortality.

So what are all of those snails eating?

I used to sell Malaysian Trumpet Snails (freshwater) on ebay. I would put 50 or so (they are tiny) in a drinking water bottle half full of water and ship them all over the place via priority mail. Had great success with it, never any DOA complaints. Maybe you could start selling them...
