Unfortunately, Sherman has this damn "let's do the math" deal rather than my approach of jump in and find a float, so it may take some time to get results on that. We are in our high season at the store too, so little time can be spent on the tank right now.

Sherman and I discussed CLs at length today, (while enjoying some Stoli Elit) but I don't feel that a failure with the Vortech should automatically turn me back to CL. I think there is more to be explored.

There must be a reason you keep me around ehh!!! I have to admit I didn't like your wavebox idea at first but if you can get even close to the numbers we discussed with them then it's a definite option though I think they will be intrusive and take more away from your viewing area than CL would. Whatever the case I look forward to the new design(and some more Stoli)!!!

Jonathan if I remember correctly wasn't your fuge on a shelf above the tank on the right? Couldn't you build a simple surge device there? Something on a hinge that once it gets full enough falls over into the tank.

Well Sherman, the wave box is much less intrusive than the usual Tunze/powerhead or even the Vortech. All you would see is a hole in the side of the tank. And I am not going to strictly adhere to leaving them with no rock obstructions. I think I can build the aquascape to hide them but leave room for flow. Don't forget that I have the 4 x 1" lines already in the tank to deal with whatever dead spots I might find.

Gabriel, I have contemplated that so many times it makes my head spin, but the reality is, I would not be able to cycle it fast enough to do any benefit, especially from the current 50g tank, or any other tank that would fit ino that space. For a 200 - 300g tank, that would be a viable option, but for my tank, I don't think so. I will look at it again of course, but really to do a proper surge tank, you need a decent elevation to get a powerful surge.

BTW guys, I am thinking about doing a fish food prep party at my place so anyone that wants to come LMK what a good date and time would be. I am running out of food, and I know there are some local reefers that want to see how I do it. The plan is to stream Marc's video-cast and go through the food making process step-by-step. Alcohol WILL be involved. :D

damn...i dont know what to say...i was/ am also looking into getting some of these...if they did that to your 1000 gallon tank...imagine what they would do to mine...wow...good luck

A new valuable piece of back-up equipment:

I was wondering what this was all about. I thought you were bragging based on the brand name of the product!

You better consider how you're gonna keep that puppy warm in the middle of winter.

Ya know J. If you were planning to run the pumps 100% anyway I wouldn't bother with the Tunze. You can just as easily build a box to hide a MJ mod or Koralia or whatever.

That sucks about your tank though... I tell ya, I would have lost my marbles a long time ago with Eco-Tech if that was me.

You'd think they would have some type of product liability insurance they could file a claim against rather than telling you to go pound sand.

You know I too have been a big supporter of this technology. I have 4 units myself and built my tank around them. I'm just happy my system's glass.

Not a good business move especially in this tight knit world.

Sorry about your bad news. :( You could try Trappist Orval, it made me a lot happier although it did nothing for my tank. :)

It will be inside Barry and I will drop in a sump pump for circulation that will keep it up to temp.

mmmm...Trappist Orval makes my tank run much better!

And Dahn, those powerheads do not cycle on and off very well, otherwise I would do that. They just aren't robust enough to handle that constant cycling. There's not a whole lot to pick from in this market space unfortunately. While I feel the Vortech motor assembly is much better built than a Tunze, that seems to be a dead end for me.

wow, that's unbelievable what those vortech pumps can do. Hope nothing major happens to your tank, love the thread by the way.

Thanks kinktao. Unfortunately it will split soon, so I will have to repost some stuff from the last few pages.

We'll see what happens, but I am fairly certain it will mean a complete dismantling of my system and loss of livestock. That's what ticks me off the most.

wow take down a 1000gal tank then you need a bigger kiddy pool....definitely you need to make Ecotech pay for your pain and suffering. They should have test their product on all senario before sending out to public use.

Well this sucks I just bought four of these damn things tonight for my 3/4"Acrylic tank. Hopefully mine will run cooler using the Wireless drivers? This bums me out to no end. :(

Jon, from the other folks you've discussed this with, does it seem to be an inherent problem or isolated to a chosen few pumps?

Anthony, you don't use the spacer for 3/4" acrylic. So that may mean that the acrylic thickness could have an indirect impact since there is no rubber insulating it. But I don't know enough about thermal issues to say one way or another.

Barry, there are a myriad of posts regarding the heat issue. Some people have removed them from their systems because they don't want their children to come into contact with the pumps. What temp. are yours operating at?

Eco-Tech's assertion is that the WWd runs the pump more efficiently so it should generate less heat. The reality of it is that using the WWD would most likely cause the pup to ramp up and down, and the net of that is less than 100% continuous flow and therefore lower heat production.

The scary part is that my offending pump was set to about 60% and did the damage. I can only theorize that at some point it malfunctioned and sped up enough to cause the damage. Believe me, when I pulled it off to swap out the driver, I was shocked at what I saw.

I was thinking that too Marc. maybe just one pump was bad and over heated. Either way it sucks and I wouldn't take a chance with acrylic
