So last night my cat woke me up. So while I was up I went poking around the tanks with the flashlight and I saw my mantis sticking his head and his tail out of his burrow. Ok, so he's just rolled up right? Wrong. He turned around and then there were 2 tails! He molted last night however he never closed his burrow, and it still isn't closed up. He also came out this morning before I turned the lights on and swam about a little bit but hasn't been out since. Any insight as to why he didn't go mia for 2 weeks? And just if anyone is curious, he ate last night.

O.s often do not close up. This is more typical behavior of gonodactylids. The explanation may be that they are burrowers in soft substrates and a sealed burrow may be too sealed (low oxygen, nasty other stuff). Eating the night before a molt is a bit unusual, but O. s do seem to feed more quickly before and after a molt than gonodactylids. The smaller they are, the shorter the interval.
