Ok substitute for DOW flake

Dowflake is only ~$15 for #50 bag around here, making it cheaper than the product you linked to. Even if it was a few bucks more expensive, it is so cheap that I would not take a chance on an unknown product. JMHO

I was also hoping that this would be a more pure form of CA since the Mfg of DOW flake says they cannot gurantee the purity of DOW. I'm sure dow is still fine, but it would be nice to find the stuff the reef mfg's use so you know for sure its perfect.

Maybe this stuff is meant for the DIYers and is as pure as the stuff Oceans Blend and Two Fishes uses.

I'll pay a couple extra bucks if thats the case.

I would be concerned about using it in my tank unless I could see an MSDS sheet. I didn't see one in your link.

Given that it's intended for aquaculture, I'd guess it's safe, but it will likely have a different content than Dow Flake, so you might need to modify the recipes, and they might be less ionically balanced.

Cham,

You can find the same thing in pool supply stores, I'm sure you have plenty of those in FL. It is sold as Hardness plus.

It appears they are an RC sponsor. So I just posted up in their thread asking for an MSDS sheet.

I've had DOW flake mix up cloudy on me my last several batches & I am concerned. Especially after the "cannot gurantee" words.

What are the reef mfg's using?

I've been using this to increase calcium in my IO waterchange water for over a year without problems. Before using I emailed them and they told me it would be fine for a reef tank and i believe they said it was anhydrous.

It'll be fine as a calcium supplement, but the recipes might need some tweaking. It's a lot like the Peladow, but perhaps more concentrated. I'd just mix as for Peladow, and watch the levels.

Thats not the MSDS on proline, thats "Hardness Pluss" from a pool supply store.

Its supposed to be Dow flake.

Is it not?

I posted the MSDS just to make 100% sure I wasn't putting something into my tank thats not supposed to be.

I don't think that's Dow Flake, but it might be Peladow, which is an anhydrous version of Dow Flake. It also might be Dow Flake Extra, which is a new product.

Should they both mix up cloudy and stay cloudy?

I was thinking the water clears after some time.

I think it is Peladow, IIRC peladow gets really hot when mixed and I just made a 4g bucket of it and its almost steaming its so hot.

How about Aqua Chem's Calcium Hardness Increaser for swimming pools as my calcium chloride? I can't find dow flake during the summer.
I bought some at Lowe's today. All it says is that it contains calcium chloride. I'll try to get an msds tomorrow.

has anyone tried it?

Thanks

There's no way of knowing how safe that product is without extensive and expensive tests, unless the product is based on Dow Flake.

Really?

So even with the MSDS it could be dangerous to my tank?

Should I email DOW to find out if its based on dow flakes?

Edit: I just looked up the MSDS on dow flake, the only difference in what I got today and DOW flake appears to be that there is more water in dow flake. Which would explain why Peladow should use 20% less in the CA recipe.

Am I understanding this correctly? I am a far cry from a chemist.

Or were you talking to reefbox?

Cause that would totally suck :D

Nevermind my above post.

I had to look up anhydrous to understand what you meant. I realize now you were not talking to me :D

Carry on
