Ok substitute for DOW flake

The MSDS is a general guide to how suitable the product is, but the MSDS won't help with evaluating copper content, for example, or other possible trace impurities.

Thanks.
I oredered some Dow from Ebay for now. I'm sure DOW will be available locally in the winter.

Really

Should I discontinue use of it? I wonder if there are others whom have evaluated it.

Hey Cham did you call the Pinch-A-Penny in Clermont, they had it there about a year ago :) but they said they can order it any time.

I tried the Pinch a Penny here in Dunnellon. They only carry their own brand of chemicals. When I ask them what chemical company does their hardness increaser come from, they said Pinch a Penny produces it themselves.Your right-they have no clue.

that Hardness Plus MSDS is the same thing as Prestone driveway heat

Are there people using Prestone?

I wonder when I would expect to see adverse effects on an SPS tank if I had bad trace elements?

i have used it before i got the dow flake with no effects on my SPS corals. according to Randy it is safe to use.

from randy's 2 part article
"If you use an anhydrous or monohydrate calcium chloride (such as Dow Mini-Pellets, Kent's Turbo Calcium, Prestone Driveway Heat or Peladow Calcium Chloride), then you should use about 20% (1/5) less solid calcium chloride by volume to make the recipe. Note that the solution will get quite hot when dissolving anhydrous calcium chloride. See the section on substitutions for further information."

hope that helps
