Olasana Lagoon: High Energy SPS Nano Build Thread

The picture to drama ratio of this thread is off the charts....

Its enough to make a person babnana's....

There are some old names here on this thread, and some others mentioned that arent here anymore...

I'm looking forward to how things turn out...

If you guys are calling that great color...........................well ok then. I thought the phrase was "A WASTE OF LIGHT" not too much light!
Anyone can compensate light saturation by: Raising the light away from the tank, cutting down the run time, putting screening on top of the tank and so forth.
"LE" in my mind would be a coral with exceptional genetics. Then, you better know what your doing to bring out those exceptional genetics. Or they won't be so exceptional:lmao::lmao:
Good job though so far! With that small amout of corals water chemistry in the correct parameters should be a breeze! Just do a baby water change and done deal!

I wouldn't call it great color, but it has gone from brown (see vid on page one) to that color in a week. I can't wait to see if the color continues to change.

It was claimed I would bleach out the corals in this thread using a 400 watt lamp.

I'm going to do this same thing with a .5 gallon tank 1000w bulb, but place in 20' above the tank! 400w psh chump change.

I remember back 15-20 years ago when the hot ticket was 400 watt halides! For growing SPS corals. The supreme set up was retrofits in tall canopy's. Then a fan on each end! One sucking in and one blowing out to really cool things down in there! The hoods or canopies where usually 16 inches tall.
One thing that's so different now is the use of VERY efficient reflectors. This allows the use of 250 watters with even more output then a old 400 watter in a canopy.
I feel like i am really cutting edge now..................................lol.
Make sure you put that in a lumenbright fixture mamothreefer! Then you can direct air traffic with it at night...................
Galleon,
Nice pic! I need to get me a dam Macro lens! Just have not had the money lately to spend. My Canon Rebel is in need of one badly!

Nah lumebright would take away from the budget I saved for an mp60. I'm using a Tin foil reflector

Been done. Well, it was a 2.5 gallon but otherwise, yeah.

Oh, 20' above the tank with a tin foil reflector, and an mp60? I also plan to an Arrow Crab, a Long Spine Urchin and the center piece will be a Agaricia grahamae from some place you would never want to go.

I read that as 20", not 20', so no on that. And I expect it was probably not an mp60, seeing as how the mp60 still had 12 years or so to go at the time before it's release date. There was however tin foil.

I'm with you Galleon. I've got a 400 watt over my 37. I ran the 400 for a couple years and tried a 250, but was not satisfied. Some corals even lost their color. I'm runnning a Radium 20K, so not quite as much par. The 250 I tried was the Neuco 20K ans I hated it. I still may try a Radium 250 watt next year.

A couple of years ago I moved to 4 250's from 2 400's. I like it because it gives me a nice range of color - 2 20000k and 2 10000. The two sets of light are staggered so all of them are only on 3-4 hours a day. Thinking though, of moving back to 400's or replacing on pair of lights with 400's because of the higher penetration factor.

WOW I love all the drama. What I really like is that a couple of reefers with successful SPS tanks make suggestions and get blown out of the water. :hammer: Good luck with your tank and I'll be checking in to see your progression.

Side Note: thank you for your help Mammothreefer & Allsps . I've watched and read your posts.

This has to be the most enjoyable and comical thread I have read in a long time, if ever. It is the first I have subscribed to on RC.

I love the set up and your obvious knowledge. However I fear that I may have massively overspent on my current build and I have a feeling that you will acheive better results!

I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

1) You are running different flow patterns day to night on your vortech. What in your experience does this get you? I have read many threads relating to different flow patterns at night promotes spawning etc etc and it seems to be a 50/50 split on it does/doesnt make a difference...whats your opinion?

2) How long did the aquascape take you to do?:)

Great thread...I look forward to watching the progress.

My reason is purely practical. The wave prevents the autotopoff float switch from operating correctly, so I need a period when the float switch can operate correctly to top off the tank. The long pulse allows that.

HAH! That's a joke right? I took two pieces of branch rock and a worm rock Porites and put them how they looked good. Maybe like 10 minutes? :lmao:

"Successful" is subjective.
