Olasana Lagoon: High Energy SPS Nano Build Thread

I just wanted to wish Galleon good luck with his tank. Just when things get bogged down with the standard keeping day after day it is interesting to see someone thinking outside the glass box with a well thought out plan.

I hope to learn something from this and am off to make popcorn (I got 14 pounds of unpopped kernals for Christmas so there is enough for everyone).

JERRY! JERRY!! JERRY!!! c'mon guys and gals... settle down... Everyone has different tastes and experiences. There is no need for all this.. Best of luck with the tank!!

More ironic than rain on your wedding day?

The funny thing is that Galleon will be the first to tell you that his tank is not outside the box thinking. :D

14 pounds? Shove some of those kernels into a fluidized reactor and change the face of reefkeeping forever!

Ok OP I never said your setup was wrong in any way and not saying it cant work. I just was giving you some advice on how to improve it and make it better. I can tell from the pics that it was a well thought out built and lost of time and thought went into it, but no really it looks like you just half threw a tank together with no planning. I am no noob even though my join date was in 2010 I had an old account back in 2005 and at that point I have been reefing for 2-3 years. To the comment made about people being post whores, most of my posts are in my own threads that I started, comments on members sweet reef tanks and help where I can be helpful. I wish you luck with this set up and I expect you to make many changes to it as it ages.

What do people expect on here when they post a pick on a 2 day old tank, with nothing but a power head, 1 small piece of LR and corals already. People are going to say something and its because we want to see people be successful with their reef tanks. My first thought when I saw the OP setup was concern for the life of corals in it and safety, cheap metal rack, power cords every where...

I don't think anyone has a problem with your suggestions, I think what ruffled feathers is that you seemed to present your husbandry suggestions as if they were widely accepted dogma, complete with very specific numbers.

I don't recall seeing any 'suggestions'. What I DID see was an unsolicited list of completely baseless admonishments from a relative noobie to someone w/a far greater understanding of reef and reef tank biology and chemistry in a most arrogant and condescending tone/manner.

People who act that way never have any real suggestions to make, imo.

Yes I am beginning to get that from his posts. I guess when people go against the norm people automatically believe that failure is the only option or that the person is lying.

It would be funny to start a thread about using popcorn to use as a food source for bacteria like the rice thread from last year.

I would set up 14 tanks, each with a different variety in order to determine kernal size in relation to nutrient uptake and :hmm5:

Looks like galleon started some sort of reunion thread without even trying!

Thanks, Jeremy, for the compliments :)

Tim

That's pretty much exactly what you were saying.

Take it as you want I guess.

There's that word again, better. Better how? You haven't qualified or backed up a single statement you've made.

In any way. All you have is a bare tank with a light and vortech and you really expect long term success with this. I am not going to back up anything. Basic reef keeping know how and experience are all I have to offer, I claim in no way to a pro but this set up is not very promising.

Wait, which is it?
I was being sarcastic. It looks like you just threw a tank together with spare stuff you have laying around with no real plan. IME the best run tanks are well planned and thought out.
Sorry if I offended you

Well, I will definitely be adding more rock in the form of live corals, as for a more powerful skimmer, we'll see, I don't have any plans to upgrade what I'm using now, but I may change my mind. And, I've already said in this thread I am going to build a stand.

The lighting will not change and does not need to change.

Ok well good luck. I know you know what you are doing so you must have a plan. When I first read the thread I was not paying attention to who posted it, only saw the pics.

You know I love you, and at the same time I think the tone of your posts doesn't really help the hobby. JMHO. :D

Yes. Though I think that is only not great when people don't have an appreciation that there are a million ways to skin a reef. When people understand that they generally offer criticism or advice much less dogmatically. :D

Nooooooooo...don't do it! :D I once claimed that I used Vitamin C to cure ich, and busted myself a couple posts later and there are still people asking about it from time to time. The fake product 'InstaFlow' still gets people asking where they can buy it.

eh the hostility is coming from all directions as are the assumptions about every bodies level of "understanding of reef and reef tank biology and chemistry".

It's pretty obvious why this thread illicit the response it has. It doesn't matter if it was Eric Boreman posting in this thread. Despite the general feeling that some of you have about the op's level of understand of reefing for those of us not familiar with said person it wasn't displayed in this thread. Half the time reading these posts I assumed it was going to be a spoof. And even if the op is veron himself just because one has a great understanding of how corals live in the the ocean, chemistry, any other semi-related matters, or even the principles behind keeping things in a glass box. Without actually showing proof being able to maintain and have a thriving aquarium it doesn't mean squat. So when you see a thread like this it's on natural for people to think something is a miss.

Just because you play call of duty, doesn't make you a marine.

I'm excited to see how this tank looks 6 months to a year from now. Although I'm new to the forums, I can see that there's people in here who seem to know each other or at least know of each other. I'll just sit back, watch and try to learn a thing or two :) pass the popcorn please

Here is a pic of part of a 550 gallon grow out system that has been running essentially the same way as Galleons tank for the past 4 years.

wait.. how do you draw a connection from a 550 gallon growout system, to a 20 long with a pvc skimmer, a single branch of rock and a 400w halide?
