Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

Love your mystery wrasse, is it aggressive with the fairy wrasses? Do you have a cover on top of the aquarium to prevent jumping?

I like this idea to elevate the bucket with an emergency drain to the sump, a simple solution that will give some peace of mind when travelling. Thanks Brett.

Thanks for the support everyone. Everything seems fine so I think I got lucky and dodged the bullet.

I have exactly this setup. The Deltec drains into a closed container that has a bulkhead in it with pipe ending in a 90 degree elbow that flows into the sump. Had to elevate the container a bit so it sits on a wooden stool. :)

Never had to use it though.

jackiechandc - Wow Greg,
So that's where those wicked frags I've been getting from you come from! Finally reading more and more posts on RC and came upon your system. Thanks again for all those sweet frags I've been getting from you. Look forward to getting more as some of those pieces aren't listed on your site! Take care.
Wei
Thanks Wei, looking forward to the next time.
jennmac415 - you have the most amazing corals!! What auto feeder do you use and does your return pump keep running while feeding? Wouldn't the food just go over the overflows if it does?

really enjoy keeping up with your tank!
Thanks very much. I use two separate feeders with my display. One is a cheapo that just simply rotates the drum every 12 hours so that it feeds about 10AM & 10PM and the other is a Rena that I have set for 3 times randomly through out the day. I keep all my pumps turned on and it dumps right in front of a vortech MP40W powerhead which blasts it around. I have tried "feed mode" before but I believe most fish don't seem to mind chasing their food and to me it just seems more natural. Also that way it gets spread around the tank so those that don't hang around by the feeder can get fed too. This wouldn't work well for something like sea horses or fish that eat very methodically but for my tank it works great. There is very little if any that goes through the overflow because the pellets tend to sink and any that stay floating get eaten by fish that don't mind pecking food of the top. The feeders are located on either side of the tank near the front so they are both several feet away from the overflow. Feeding 5 times a day may sound like a lot but the portions aren't very big and I have a lot of fish.
Thanks for the question.

Squanto804 - beautiful, Nice Job!!
Thank you.:)

Thanks, I really like wrasses and the mystery has a lot of personality. It has grown quite large but isn't very aggressive toward the other wrasses. I think this has a lot to do with the amount of room and no shortage of food. I don't have the top covered but again with lots of room it's been my experience they tend to jump less. If they do jump, unless it's toward the back, they would at least in theory hit the canopy and bounce back in.

Coincidently I just rigged mine up early last evening with a 1.5" bulkhead and the pipe going back to the sump exactly as you described ending with a 90 degree elbow. I am confident this should put an end to any flood issue from the skimmer.:celeb2:

Ok I'll take one ASAP, mine is pretty ghetto. If Nexdog or anyone else wants to post their's here that would be great.

Beautiful Greg, do the pyramids touch any SPS at all? Did you experience any positive or negative reactions due to the large waterchange last week?

Thanks Leonardo, I have not seen the pyramids picking at any sps or LPS so far. Shortly after I first got them they picked at some paleys a bit but nothing serious and they only did that for a few weeks. They are certainly aggressive eaters and swarm to whichever side of the tank the pellets drop from the auto-feeders. My emperor angel is another matter. He has been picking at just about everything including clams and he has polished off a few zoa colonies. He's quite the rascal and he loves to chase the pyramids around as well but so far no damage to them. He may eventually have to get relocated.

I lost a couple of pieces during the ordeal but nothing major, the silver lining is that it gave me room to move a few pieces into the display from the frag tank I hadn't known where to put. Unfortunately I did have some sentimental attachment to one because it was a very fussy acro I've had for about 4 years and nursed back to health several times and actually restarted from a frag twice but now I don't need to stress over that piece anymore. :fun5: Because the water level dropped about 4-5 inches I had the coraline algae that was exposed to the air die off on the back glass so there was a 5" white patch across the top which didn't look very good so it forced me to finally clean it again(big job so I keep procrastinating) so another silver lining to the cloud. Looks much better now so I am sure I'll feel prompted to take some FTS's again.

I also just stocked up on Reefers Best Salt again so water changes will be done with more confidence for a good long time.

Thanks for your interest.

Re the emperor - have you had to try to remove a fish out of this tank yet? I'm just curious how that would have to play out if you had to remove him. I'm guessing fish traps?

Haven't had to yet but likely either a trap or line & hook.

Hmmm, maybe I have to consider the Pyramid Butterflies for my next tank. Do they behave well in groups? Do they stay close to each other?

Too bad you lost that coral, I hate to lose a coral where you put so much effort in and kept for a long time, but sometimes corals just won't adapt well to captivity.
Good to hear that you have a fresh batch of RBS again. It's also my favorite salt for a long time and really see the tank improve after a waterchange, instead of a shock-effect.

Looking forward to the FTS :)

I recommend them, They're a great fish and they do best in groups and stay together quite a bit. I am doing a RBS water change today.:smurf: Maybe even take a FTS today.

updated FTS----11 months in

updated FTS----11 months in

Had the camera out today and snapped a few shots. One day I hope I'll be able to take a better FTS because I am just not happy with what I'm getting. I can't get the colours right. If I get the reds & pinks to show the other colours get washed out. Anyway I appoligize for the poor quality in advance, I played with the exposure settings a bit trying to fix the white balance but can't get it right but here's the best of my several attempts today.

jennmac415 - very very beautiful! Congrats on your tank coming along so nicely!
Thanks Jenn

kinlayan - what species of gorgonian is that?
I keep forgetting the Latin name and will have to look it up. It is commonly called "corky finger" and is a very easy to keep photosynthetic gorgonian.

Mikep503 - Things are really starting to look amazing! Thanks for the update!
Thanks for the compliment & thanks for looking.
