Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

prop-frags - I typically try to avoid "piling on" but in this case, it's just the right thing to do.

CONGRATS GREGG ON TOTM!!!

So very well-deserved!
Thanks very much, I appreciate you piling it on for me.:D

TandN - Congrats on the TOTM
Thank you kindly.

It's been one of those weeks. I'll be out tomorrow buying a new feed pump for my skimmer since I just discovered my present one toasted with not much left of the impeller magnet so I think I've been skimmerless for at least a week and didn't notice (busy week).:rolleye1:

I was going through some old pictures this morning and came accross an very early FTS. I was surprised at the way some of the pieces grew and the tank has filled in since then.

Greg, your tank is simply awe inspiring. Definitely one of the best one's I've seen. Thank you for sharing and providing a vision of what could be when you know what you're doing.

roktsintst - WOW Greg, That is excellent growth in just a year!!! Great Work!
Thanks. Yeah I generally take the growth for granted but when I see the old pictures the transformation is much more apparent. I'm surprised at the growth of many of the fish. :eek2:
Dejavu - Great growth Greg!
Thanks Brian

Thanks Dan, that's quite the compliment. Not sure I'm worthy of such praise because I'm still just learning & the longer I am in the hobby and the more I learn it seems the less I know.:reading: I'll let you know if I ever start to feel like I really know what I'm doing.

:sad2:Just found my Meredithi angel dead today. Not any bite marks on it so I think the Imperator just stressed him to death with it's constant harassment and threats. Not happy about this!!:sad2:

Ouch... I know how you feel. Just found my Labouti yesterday dried up on the carpet behind my tank. He was really coming into his own too, I will miss him... :(

On another note Gregg, I'm curious to know how any of your fish are doing for you in your on going bubble algae issue you mentioned awhile back? I'm having some GHA and bubble algae that's really driving me nutty.

Love to get your feedback,

Thanks

Great growth in just one year Greg! Noticed any improvements or negative reactions now that the skimmers is down? Not an experiment you want to do on purpose but now that it happened either way it can be interesting to see the results ;)

Thanks Dave, sorry to hear about your Labouti. In regards to the bubble algae, it is still around but for the most part has not gotten out of control. I still don't notice the fish eating it off the rocks, mainly just when a piece is "free floating" around the tank.

Yes my skimmer is still down. I picked up a new feed pump and I guess with it being empty for a few days the seal on the drain valve must have dried out and now leaks like crazy so I am trying to order the part. So far I don't notice anything yet but alot of the symptoms we see in sps take weeks to show up. I was talking to a friend of mine about this in length recently, one of the challenges with sps is trying to remember what changes were made two or three weeks previous that are causing the issues we see today. It will take some time for being "skimmerless" to catch up and I will hopefully have it back online by then.
bullitr - very nice growth Sir,
i wish my corals will grow fast too!
Thanks, if they grow for me they should grow for you too.:)

Man I just finished reading your tank of the month profile and its amazing, but what I liked the most was what that one person said about there being a creator. That is just simply awsome. Keep up the good work and God bless.

Thanks for reading it through and I appreciate your kind remarks.

Since my tank was featured I have had several people asking me about auto feeders, what I use & is the info in my build thread. Because of this interest I've decided I should provide a little bit of info here. The brand I use is RENA and it is the model that has a small heater in it so the food doesn't absorb moisture and stays dry. It has a light sensor so it will only feed while the lights are on and has lots of feed cycle options including a manual dump which I like so I can easily create a feeding frenzy when I'm viewing or people come over hoping to see some action. Below is a picture of what it looks like. Not shown in the picture is the support gizmo that lets it sit steady on the tank edge and doesn't tip. The unit isn't cheap but in my opinion it has paid for itself many times over in both hassle free time saved and fat happy livestock.

Interesting!

Interesting!

Not sure what triggered this but my chromis's are spawning like crazy today. There are a few corals that had some die off that I was going to cut off this weekend but this is where the chromis's decidided to lay their eggs. What is cool is the fish are schooled together about a foot away from where the eggs are being laid and the male swims over and keeps bringing different females over to the area which make a protrusion from her under side that she rubs along the rock (dead coral) and then the male follows right behind her rubbing his protrusion on the same area that is now covered in white looking spots. I've never seen this before and thought it was pretty cool so I thought I'd share the story. I did get a little video but my camera is analogue and my "still shot" digital camera battery was dead. If they are still at it later today I'll snap a few shots once my battery charges.

Greg, congratulations on TOTM! Well deserved.

As to the Chromis, I´m sorry for the intrusion but do you mean something like this:

IME, Chromis spawning is a double ended sword; fascinating to assist at the beginning but very stressful to the rest of the fish as the spawning parents become more and more aggressive. At least in a 90g. ;)
