OMG Cracked!

+1 on the craigslist ad. Someone will haul it away happily. Also, it should hold together fine in the move, but taping the crack can't hurt, but that is why you let it go for free, so if they bust it further, no worries.

I would definately consider replacing the glass pane. I just built another 100g and a 1/2" x 48 x 24 glass goes for about $90 with polished edges. You would have a brand new, scratch and crack free viewing surface. Based on my experience it would take about 3 hours to remove the old pane, and clean up the surfaces that it would mate to. Lot cheaper than a new tank and it solves the disposal problem.

Think of it as a good time to upgrade to starphire front glass pane.

I have never built a plywood tank and likely never will but if someone was going to all that effort why not just replace the glass. Considering all of the costs I doubt if plywood is any less expensive. Good epoxy sealant is not cheap.

For this size of tank, you are right. From what I read, there won't be much, if any, savings.

I can see one good reason for this... you could basically double/triple the size of the tank, or build it to specifically fit the space you have. You don't have a lot of constraints on the size or shape of a ply tank....

Sorry to hear! This story gives me a chill because I am going from acrylic to glass tank.

I wouldn't worry :). Acrylic tanks break as well. Also, considering there are FAR mor glass than acrylic tanks, these tank bursts are a very rare occurence.

You can cut glass to any size you want, but like plywood at some point thickness and structural issues become a big factor.

I don't know if it cracks easier but I have heard it is softer and therefore is more prone to scratches.

Be very careful moving that thing, if it goes the rest of the way while you all are carrying it, that could be dangerous...like someone loses a hand.

Sorry about the tank, man.

dismantle the tank and save/clean the remaining intact pieces. Then you could use them for a wooden fiberglass coated monster :celeb1:

What exactly is a plywood tank?

I can't use the back as the new front cause it has the overflows.

I talked to some people about replacing the front pane but most say it always leaks eventually. Maybe if I had a lot of experience with glass tank building, but I don't. If the people that built the tank had their work crack, my fixing it has even less of a chance of having it not leak.

I've pretty much decided on trying to sell it as a terrarium, trying is the key word, I don't think I will ever get this thing out of my garage. Its just so much trouble to move the damn thing. I mean 6 people can barely do it. I have those expensive suction cups too. Finding 6 strong people is a hard job sometimes.

This is where the free you pick it up craigslist add comes in. ;)
