OMG! my electric bill doubled!

Just opened my SCE bill for 7/14 - 8/14 and it is double the normal amount; from $220 to $540!

Granted this was the hotter period and I was running extra fans, but this is a little ridiculous.

Bulk of my bill is over $400 in generation charges alone.

I hate to think of you guys that already had $500 electric bills and people that are running air conditioning.

Needless to say, I am contemplating some drastic measures to reduce my electric bill.

Since Aug was cooler than July my bill was $100 less- from $375 to $250 on this billing cycle. I also saved $80 this month because of the AC recycling discount as well

My winter bill is about $250. My normal summer bill has reached as high as $580. Well, the last bill I paid while crying was $890. Im going to go postal...

:(

Luckily my SCE bill did not increase, it stayed the in the same range $210 range.
I did, however, raise theAC thermostat temp, consolidated pumps, less lights, etc. I had much lower KW consumption, but did not see any cost reduction. Go figure.

man I feel for people living in california and other high cost areas. I run two tanks with MH keep the temp in my house at 72, run a pool filter 8 hours a day and have kids that can't seem to figure out how to turn off a light or shut a door. and the temp has been 90 to 100 all july and most of august here and my last combined electric and gas bill was $165.00

I hear ya, my bill went up about 60%. I am not happy. Youd think they could raise it slowly. Rather than all of a sudden....

Mike:confused:

Yeah,

This month was painful, I paid 40% more than normal. I did have my AC running at 80 day and night. I think I'll have to turn it off during the day when I'm not home.

Chris, I hear you might be downsizing. If u decide to go that route I may be interested in your clam.

Here is our problem... From the FAQ

The CPUC adopted on June 29, 2006, a proposal by customer groups and SCE that the utility return to a five-tier rate structure for residential customers similar to the rate plan the commission adopted between 2001 and 2003. The new, fifth level will allow for lower level-three and -four rates than would otherwise apply. On the other hand, costs for extremely high consumption will increase.

By law, the first two rate levels cannot exceed January 2001 tier-one and -two levels. This means the remaining tiers must bear the weight of any utility cost increases.

Higher-Use Residential Customers
Because of the rate increase restrictions described above, higher-use households have already been exceptionally hard hit by this year’s rate increasesHere is our problem... From the FAQ

So those of us with Aqariums, AC units, Pools and the like are paying ALOT. The system will mean things that were once considered nice to have are now labled as Luxuries and most of us will have to sell them, or not use them.

Just read that link Chris. Isn't nice that they only compare to Dec '05. I wonder what the rates were before that!!!

Also did you catch the part that in 2007 we will make up for the Aug-Nov rate increase that was delayed. This is so ridiculous!!!!

dbassin
What was your Kwh usage? Monthly and daily average if you have it.

This just goes to show that it can be sold cheaper out there and once again us Californians let them get away with it!!!!

I HATE THIS TOPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

looking a little closer, I see another BIG problem headed our way...

They have a Chart in there that show these numbers:

rate_structure.jpg

This is scarey...

For those of us in the 200% of baseline bracket...

Last December $0.196 per KWH
Currently $0.312 per KWH
in November $0.482 per KWH

We all have a few months to trim our usage or we will be in the crapper yet again.

That is another 50% increas on the big users, so a $500 bill will become $750

Yikes!

Woohoo... my $796.80 bill will be 1K plus by winter. God love the free market society of a deregulated electric company with no natural competition and a huge barrier to entry. Do the people who make the laws take economics? Can we go back to government regulated electricity in california?

Slavearm

PS- I shat my pants when I opened the bill yesterday. It was as if someone played the brown-note.

Kinda make you want to give up the hobby don't it? If I have a tank crash or another reason to give up like rtn or red bugs, I would probably quit bacause of the elec. cost . :(

My bill is not due for another week or two. It will be interesting to see how much my big tank was actually using; I sold the tank almost right at

Of course, my bill was only $90 with the tank, even when I had MH's a while back my usage wasn't bad. I only hit 100%+ rates sometimes, and conservation measures kept me below that tier. My worst bills were when I was keeping half a dozen S-strain rotifer cultures heated to 92F -- during the winter!

But I have been aware of power usage for a long time, so in a lot of ways I am already as low power as I can get unless I want to do without hot water.

I suspect my next bill will be in the $40-50 range, and that's with running three nanos. I just took down one of the nanos this weeked that was holding some items I had for sale.

WOW!!! $0.42 per KWH is alot. The last piece of equipment I will have to replace will be my ETSS-1000 Skimmer. The Iwaki 70 that my skimmer uses is 270 watts. At 0.482 per KWH that works out to $96 a month just for my skimmer. Looking to replace it with a more energy efficient recirc skimmer by the rate increase.

Because of this thread and paranoia, I went online to check my next bill Vs. my last. It went down by 50 bucks due to the cooler August. Thanks God I don't have to quit yet.:)
