On a mission

Hi,

Okay, whilst I was at the LFS I picked up what looks like a bleached Anemone.

From what I know so far it's an H. Crispa, and should be a brown/tan colour with purple tips. My mission is to help this little guy.

I've dripped him into my 4ft tank and placed him on the substrate, next to a rocky overhang so he has the option of some shade whilst he settles in.
The good news is, my LFS had the same lighting on their tank as me, so adjusting to the lighting shouldn't be too much of a problem.

When I dripped him, his mouth was open although he's now closed it (which I think is a good sign (?)). I've chopped up some Silverside into small pieces and tried to hand feed him today, but he's not taking the food :(

My tank is a 4ft bow front (107 gallon) with near perfect water params.

Lets hope he settles in and cheers up, but any advice anyone can offer to help settle him is appreciated! :)

Search Reefcentral for Silversides and stop trying to feed them to the nem.
I'm no expert but may be adjusting which is why refusing the food when offered.
Only really needs good light so don't worry too much about feeding, make sure your parameters and light are good for the anemone.

Smaller foods like mysis are best in bringing back to health, and I agree silversides have been an issue for many, including myself.
It does look like a crispa

Thanks for replies.

He seems settled enough, hasn't moved (yet) from where I put him, but he has opened up and extended. He's now double the size he was in the store tank :D

I'll maybe try him on some Mysis over the next or so, and will post any updates.

Thought I'd post a quick update.

It's now day 3 and this little guy is full of character :)

He's moved himself back slightly from where I put him, so he's in a nice shaded area just below a rocky overhang. He's fully extended (almost transparent) and all his tentacles are nicely inflated.

He's not fed (yet) I've tried him with small pieces of raw shrimp, mysis and chopped silverside, but I guess he just not ready yet. On the plus side, my 2 clowns have stopped trying to host my Hammerhead, and have both settled in the Nem instead :D

I'm guessing a) he's getting enough food from the lighting whilst he settles in and b) the clowns will be giving him some food too as and when he wants it.

If the food is smelly (spoiled) don't use it because this will kill your anemone. They cannot deal with a bacterial load to their internal cavity. Almost all silverside I ever touch with my hand smell horrible. I really second the notion that you should not use silverside.
In fact, don't feed your tank anything you would not hesitant to eat.
Your Crispa is bleached, so it will not able to get any energy from light right now. You need to feed him. I would smash any seafood you want and feed this to him. At this stage, he need small food so he can easy digest it. I often take salmon or shrimp and feed this to my weaken (but otherwise not infected) anemones.
Best of luck to you and your anemone.

Update:
Little guys doing just great! Fully inflated daily (around 6-7" disk) with tentacles inflated :)

He's now taking small bits of food twice a week and seems to be thriving. Originally, he was a yellowish colour with purple tips, but his disk is now turning more of a very pale brown so (if he was originally bleached) he may be starting to get his colour back! :D

Clowns are still hosting him, and doesn't seem to bother him at all.
