Oncasso (Onyx-Picasso) Questions

JonnyBravo
Your statement is only half correct.I do believe ORA bred Onyx Percula to get the Picasso markings, hence all the black coloration. Your statement about Onyx being selective bred is not completely correct. Onyx can be a natural occurrence in the wild. Sustainable Aquatics shows a pair on their web site that were wild caught in the Solomon Islands.

umm.....well :hmm2: starting with the positive, you're totally right that picasso and onyx coloration naturally occurs in the wild. but most people dont get wild onyx or wild picassos, and in fact they get the ones from breeders, like rods and doni and ora and others, that selectively breed clowns for these traits. so yes, they occur naturally, and yes, they are selectively bred. so everything i said is 100% correct. ;)

I saw a wild caught pair of Picassos, they were way to much money, almost twice as much as a ORA pair.

I currently have 2 mature pairs of Onyx Percs that were caught from the Solomon Islands. I personally have never heard of Onyx Percscoming from a selective breeding program. Picasso's, Platinums, Snowflakes, Wyoming Whites, are all a result of line breeding. Although it does happen in the wild (very rare). It all comes down to a recessive gene that has been expoited through selective breeding. JM2C

are you kidding? the guy who coined the term "Onyx" clownfish, Bill Addison, is from C-Quest and he selectively bred the line of onyx clowns that is perhaps the most popular (since Rod of "Rod's food" fame began selling clowns that descended from this line). the fish in this line, due to generations of selective breeding, are also regarded as having a very high 'hit-rate' of offspring that display the onyx coloration.

did you think people only get onyx clowns from the wild? look around you, there are and have been several commercial breeders of onyx clownfish.

I do not doubt that there are onyx breeders out there. I know of several. In my last post I was not referring to that Onyx percs only come from the wild, I think that I obviously wasn't that clear in last post. Yes Bill selectively bred these Onyx clowns to produce a desire that Rod has been successful with.

Bill Addison "invented" the term onyx. My understanding is that Bill is in the mining business, and when he started seeing percs that developed lots of black quickly, he started to market them as Onyx perculas. Bottom line is that they are all perculas, you can call them whatever you like, but they are all perculas with different degrees of blackness to them. Bill Addison also gave the name "wyoming white" to an all white variation of ocellaris, because he is from wyoming. I just can't believe the amount of misinformation on these forums.

jonnybravo22 -- would you please tone down the attitude a bit.

And for the record, here is a picture of my SI percs -- wild caught, when I first got them,

Those are great looking fish Todd. I hope my captive bred pair of onyx look half as good when their all grown up.

those are nice fish.

well i dont think i deserved a reprimand, i'm not a forum bully and havent been calling anyone names or anything, all i've done is correct misstatements (like the one that onyx clowns were / are not selectively bred for commercial sale, as well as being found naturally in the wild, which the poster agreed that he had worded his statement improperly, and state clearly the true fact that onyx and picasso clowns are true perculas)

other than that i've offered to the original poster that its my belief that his picassos will look like other picassos given the lineage of at least some popular captive-bred picasso clowns is that they were offspring of onyx clowns that showed extreme misbar.

happy to stop giving advice if it's inaccurate, but i think my comments are true and helpful to people reading. that said, i respect Todd and others, don't mean to go off topic and i'm happy to leave this conversation for others, so i'll just bow out here.

good luck with your clowns everyone and i hope you continue to be better informed about them through the use of this forum. :spin1:

I didnt sense any attitude in his posts. They were having a civilized discussion.
Johnnybravo: That was good information.

I didn't reprimand anyone, I asked, very nicely, just to tone down the attitude a bit -- don't tell me, jonnybravo22, that there wasn't any sarcasm in your posts.

Now I remember why this forum gives me headaches.

Yikes :lmao:
I'm assuming it wasn't something positive. :worried2:

lol no it wasnt positive but it was nothing like telling people that they have an attitude...

To answer your question I would concider it to be a female after a few months of being alone just to be safe. You never want to take a chance on stuff like that when it can be avoided.

OK thanks. I'll pick out another baby "Oncasso" when the next batch comes in to make sure it's a male. :D
