one or maybe two more fish for the 40

My 40 breeder only has my female clown and starry blenny. I'm looking for one maybe two more fish. It's open top but I could DIY a screen top if need be. What does everyone suggest. I want color and activity. I was think some kind of wrasse. Tank itself has only been up for a fee months but all the rock and sand is from older systems(2+ years) so the tank is actually pretty well established.

A Possum Wrasse or Pink-Streaked Wrasse (Pseudocheilinops ataenia) would do well in a 40, but you would definitely need to cover the tank! There are a couple of smaller Fairy Wrasses that would likely be fine, those that stay around 3" (C. lubbocki & flavidorsalis come to mind).

I was thinking some kind of fairy but I know some wrasses get pretty big so it's good to know some are around other than a 6 line ha I assumed a cover might be a good idea for a wrasse.

You may have real problems adding any fish with a female clown, especially one of the large species like maroon or tomato. They are incredibly territorial. When you add a fish, after the QT of course, I'd put the female clown in the QT for a couple of weeks. When she goes back in, she will have to reestablish a smaller territory.

She's a true perc but that's a good tip. I actually figured the wrasse would be more aggressive than my clown.

+1 for the pink streaked wrasse. I recently got one from Divers Den. It's got a great personality and it keeps getting prettier as it grows. IMO, the possum wrasse seem to hide a lot.

Cherub Pygmy angel or any of the dwarf angels would stand up to your clown. They may limit your coral selections though. My angels are fond of LPS, so big fleshy stuff like brains and acans are out.
