One pair of Perc's, two clutches?

maxxII

Super Housemonkey!
I've got a mated pair of Rod's Onyx Perc's I've had for almost 10 years now, and they just did something I've never seen before...

Laid a second clutch before the first hatched....

Please forgive the horrible picture, I took it with my Ipotato.....Older clutch is to the left, newly laid clutch, (last night) is the patch of orange on the right.

I stopped annotating when the eggs were laid since I dont try to raise the fry and no longer have anyone who is interested locally in taking the eggs to rear themselves....but it was usually a 14 day cycle.

Eggs laid on day 1.
Eggs hatch on day 10.
New clutch laid on day 14, (which becomes day 1 all over again).

Anyone else had this happen before?

That in the picture is the male and you can see how undernourished he is. It's not that I wasn't feeding them enough, he was just always too busy and stressed to eat enough.

Good to know.

Did yours always do that, or was it something that started later on....like say, year 10 in your care?

off the subject, is this pair really RodOnyx? One looks like just a regular true perc? Where they ever jet black?

Yes, they are true Rod's Onyx Perc's. I bought the female as a juvenile and another juvenile online in 04. I lost the little juvenile when he jumped out and bought two additional juveniles from Rod himself at his place in Dekalb in 05 I believe. The female bonded with one and I sold the other locally because she was going to kill it.

I'll dig up other pictures and post in a bit. Female has the most black and is misbarred.

Hi Phil!
Good to see you again! Glad it's happening to more people than just me, I was beginning to worry my clowns were getting a little long in tooth and this was a way of showing it. I know they can live upwards of 22 years in captivity, but wasnt sure as mine had never exhibited any deviation from the 14 day schedule.
