Online live rock?

I agree completely with Moebuis. After 3 years, I cannot tell which rocks were "live" or "dead" 3 years ago. They are all live now with same inhabitants. if you place a rock with pods, bacteria, worms, feather dusters, etc next too a rock without, some of the inhabitants will move over to the "dead" rock, and reproduce like crazy.
 
To say that dead rock can never become live even if it is seeded is just plain ignorant. It will colonize with creatures that bore into it, live on it and in it, and grow all over it. This includes, spaghetti worms, feather dusters, peanut worms, stars, urchins, sponges, mini nems, etc. Please stop spreading misinformation, especially in the newbie forum. If you don't seed it, and add nothing to your tank, then you will not have any luck, but who does that?

Please show me one time spaghetti worms or other borrowing organisms have migrated from live rock to dry rock?

We do not have enough of these organisms in our system or the right condition in our tanks for them to reproduce since many of them are broadcast spawner's. Any young that are produced are either eaten by our corals or removed through protein skimmer or water changes.

There is something called old tank syndrome which some people believe is caused by the clogging of the rock with waste due to the loss of burrowing organisms due to their inability to reproduce in our aquariums.

I can see the point you are trying to make. But I still don't believe it.

Our corals and protein skimmers will never remove 100% of these organisms. And by saying our tanks don't have the right conditions to support these organisms, you are also saying the LR we buy will eventually become dead rock. Just my opinions, feel free to make/keep your own. A lot of discussions on this board are like politics, you can argue until you are blue in the face but in the end everyone still has their own opinions that no one can change-

I got some dry rock from marco rocks and could not have been happier with it, it is awesome!!!!
 
I've been going back and forth looking for an online place to buy rock but I think I'm going to give premiumaquatics a try

Most places will tell you approx/how many size pieces (ie. 5-12" or 3"-8" etc.) So you have a rough idea what size the pieces are going to be, etc.

If you really cherry pick, you may not get what you ultimately want, because there's only so much locally, if you were to go that route.
 
Well I got the rock in, and its ok.. This aquascaping is going to drive me to drink! This is the only thing I hate in this habby, I'm never happy with the look, so I just put all the rock in the tank, and I'll try again tomorrow.. :sad2:

Thats the thing with aquascaping. It always takes several tries before it looks good. Just work on one side of the tank at a time. I find if you do it in pieces and tie it together it is more manageable.

It looks like you have a reef ready tank. If you have a sump set up can you fit some of the rock in there?

No room, but I'm thinking of setting up a QT once money allows, and I might use some rock from the main tank for the QT.
 
CAS, just my 2 cents here based on my understanding, and maybe I missed this in a previous post - I just scanned these 3 pages, but the beneficial bacteria - anaerobic bacteria deep in the rock specifically, is what makes live rock "live", not just the cool little worms and critters you see on the surface. Anaerobic bacteria inside the LR and aerobic bacteria on the surface is the biological filter for your reef. The anaerobic bacteria is much more efficient at removing nitrate and that's why a suitable amount of "live" rock is necessary for a thriving reef tank. Aerobic bacteria is not as good and some actually produce nitrate as a by-product (that's why bio wheels and bio balls are not all that beneficial for a reef tank). Again, just my 2 cents. I'll be starting my next tank (hopefully an Oceanic Tech Series 120!) with an affordable base of dry rock and about half that amount in "live" rock.
 
I bought my LR from Premium Aquatics 235 pounds and couldn't be happier. You look like you recived some very nice rock and are doing a good job putting it in your tank. I really like that concaved piece on the right side of your tank, I would pull out the two small pieces under it though and let it be a nice cave place for some of your larger fish that might end up in your tank.

I just need to get a few snails to clean up the algae growing on the rock, it's not too bad yet though. From what I've read, it should clear up in a month or so, is this true? My 2 blue damsels are doing a great job picking at it, but I doubt they will be able to keep up with it.
