Online vs. LFS

We have only had some pretty shotty LFS' here until recently when a new guy came into town and seems to have very good prices and is just nice in general. I will be trying to do more of my shopping at that LFS now, but the other two have poor employees, prices are higher than the roof and they don't give good advice to newbies.

I try to go to the local fish stores If I can but for corals they just don't have it. I have been ordering from happy coral and have been more than pleased! He has low shipping costs and the corals come as they looked in the pictures.

i was fiercely loyal to my lfs (in my town) well his partner left things started falling apart and the store now is in sad shape to say the least lol. I got my first online order from live aquaria a few weeks ago, I'll never go back to my lfs!

I personally rather spend money on local businesses and as others said, after many years I get special deals and .... others dont ...

but that is if the local shop carries high end brands and stuff, if not then online is the way to go :)

Plus on top of all that, if something goes wrong, after spending a fortune in the LFS, he is more willing to help me or even come by to take a look at everything, something online would /could never do !

I prefer the local fish stores, especially for livestock. It's real easy to avoid any unwanted "guests" when you know what to look out for. "Cherry picking" is another term for this I believe.. ;)
I will be buying my next MH bulb from an online source next week though. My LFS doesn't carry the brand I want and the vendor is offering free shipping.

I try to buy as much as i can from my lfs, But the closest to me with any salt supplies i 1 1/2 hrs away. So if im real busy i will do mail order, or one of them will ship me what i need.

i love shopping online for stuff, and usually when i buy i'll splurge 300-400 at a time to get the free shipping :) but i also like visiting the local stores for items i must have immediatly..
anyone know any good stores in the dallas/ft. worth area?? so far only one i have found is called true percula, while thier fish and dry goods and equipment is nice thier prices are double what i could get it online for.

Fish2morow in Fort Worth (Beach & Basswood) but I think they're kinda high too. Big store with lots of selection though, both corals & fish.

Keller Farms in Fort Worth (Denton Hwy/377 between Webster & W. Broadway). Small SW room, but huge place. Lots of dry goods. Prices seemed comparable to online.

True Percula, but you've been there. Their drygoods prices are actually pretty good for a brick-and-mortar LFS, cheaper than most places in DFW by a good amount (at least $10 or more).

Franks Tanks on S. Hulen in Ft. Worth. Didn't see much in the way of dry goods, didn't price fish either since we just went for salt, but hear lots of good things about them.

Fish Paradise (McCart in Ft. Worth). TONS of fish to choose from, and some pretty good size corals too. Prices were reasonable.

North Texas Corals (West Bedford-Euless Road). New and small, but he's got some pretty good coral frags & prices. Last time we went in, he had removed his fish tanks because they were replacing them. Probably back up by now.

Petworld (Haltom City)...skip it.

Other places that I haven't been to:

Neptune's Cove in Plano. Supposed to be a great store, but don't know about prices.

Exotic Aquatics in Plano. Has awesome reviews in google LOL.

Dallas North Aquarium in Carrollton. Been there a lot, but that was in the late 90s early 00s. Mixed reviews but lots of customers from what I hear.

Hope that helps you!

Oh, and as to the original question...I used to only buy online in 2001-2004 when I had tanks before (with an occasional purchase at my local Petco before the good SW guy left & the tanks went to crap). This time around it seems I'm buying drygoods online and livestock (so far only cleanup crew) at the LFS. My boyfriend I think prefers getting critters where he can see them & I've come home to the cleanup crew waiting in the tank for me heheheh, so we'll likely be going that route. North Texas Corals has said they'd let me buy on line & have it shipped there to pick up, so there might be some of that too.

thanks sushigirl.. looks like i got a lot of exploring to do.. lol this was definatly easier when i lived in n.c. was only 2 shops withing 150 mile radius worth visiting, now i have probably 5-7 good stores worth shopping from.
Just set back up my tank last month and finished my cycle now im ready to buy more liverock, anyplace that you buy rock from locally? whether buy cured liverock but really dont want fiji..

Fish2morow probably has the most selection of live rock, but it's always different at different times. I don't buy locally cuz I haven't seen any location that didn't have some kind of pest (aiptasia, hair algae) on it (or no coralline), except maybe at North Texas Corals, but I haven't been in there for several weeks so don't know what his stock is like right now. I don't remember seeing any pests in his container of live rock. I had 75lbs of old rock from before and bought 15 more of the same rock online for the coralline colors and the shapes/textures. To me, nothing beat my old rock! LOL

We'll probably go sometime in the next few weeks & check out the stores in the Plano area...it's a drive for us.
