Onyx Clowns?

Interested in getting a pair of Onyx clowns but would like to know what the going rate for one is or a pair? Also if anyone has pictures of Onyx clowns feel free to post away and mention how much you paid if you don't mind sharing.

Here is my breeder pair. Female is Rod's, male is C-Quest. The going rate seems to vary depending on what broodstock they are coming from. You can find smaller pairs for around $200.

Beautiful looking clowns you have there. Thats a bit steep of a price to fork out for clownfish, will have to persuade my better half on this one.

When are they Onyx?

When are they Onyx?

Now that pair are Onyx. Mine are just "semi Onyx"? I have raised several hundred babies from this pair and interestingly they had quite a variety of striping patterns in their offspring. Some were onyx while others were Misbars and even a couple of "Semi-Picasos". None were as completely black as the pair in the second post. I've kept these two for 12 years now and they still spawn every two weeks.

Good looking clowns there. So the prices can vary big time from Picaso Onyx, Mis Bars Onyx, Full Onyx, etc.

Could someone explain what a mis bar onyx is and post a picture of one if possible. Also a picaso onyx as well.

That's because raising perfect holotypes is much, MUCH harder than raising misbars. When breeders start out, they are lucky if they get one or two perfect holotypes per spawn - all the rest have flaws like bad spines, bad jaws, misbars, etc.

Now I don't want to get into the argument about whether people LIKE misbars or not - since clearly some people love them. However misbars are much easier to produce than perfect stripes.

Note that the A. latezonatus coming out of Honolulu are being marketed as "perfect stripe" fish - because they are so hard to produce and many people are looking for perfect fish to use as breeders.

I'd say your female is an onyx while your male is a true perc. Very nice pair. You should get some interesting striped off-spring from yours because the middle stripe protrudes so far forward on both. I was pretty lucky to stumble upon my female in a LFS that they took in as a trade in and took lots of time and looking to find a male with similar coloration. I haven't tried to raise any of the fry from these two and have considered selling them to someone who could. I'm sure the fry would be super nice.
