Onyx coloration development

I did leave out nutrition/food.That would be # 6....Rod, Good to see your back.I bought one fish from a fellow that bought it from from Inland in 1995. I saw the recipt. She is with a male that is your Grand baby. And spawning 90% Onyx. The other two pairs came from inland in 98 and 99 so there is a good chance they are c-quest.

can someone explain the deal with onxy clowns? Are they a type of Ocellaris? I've had a small misbar clown for about 8 months now that is coloring oddly. He has one full white stripe and just a small "dot" of a second. Until recently that's how he has looked. Lately, he has started getting darker on his top, from his head to his dorsal. Is it possible he is onyx? If not, does he sound like any other color variation that anyone's heard of? Here is a shot of him as a baby before the recent change.

Hello to all.I own 7 pairs of onyx.3 pair of c-quest[Sisters and brothers to Rods}3 pair of Rods Onyx and 1 pair of wild caught onyx....all spawing.I have about 3 thousand onyx perc babies rangeing in age from, born last night to over 2 years old.Ther are five factors that govern the coloration of onyx.......#1 genitics If your fish are not from a long line of Onyx they will never give you the jet BLACK that we love....#2 lighting the brighter the light darker your fish.#3 Age It will take up to two years for your fish to reach full color...#4 Sexual Maturity This differs from age ,in that a fish keep alone will not be as nice as a fish with a mate.If I keep several fish together they stay juvi.it takes them much longer to color up.If i pair them, they color up much quicker.#5 Their host.Keep your fish out of BTA's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I hope this helps Mitch

i have probably one of the last pairs Rod shipped. Got them in Sept. The male is coloring up nicely but the female still looks just like a true perc. I got excited a couple weeks ago when the male got a bunch of black dots between the second and third stripe, but they disappeared and he has gone back to still being completely orange btw the 2 and 3rd stripe. Rod or anyone-have you seen this phenomenon before? at first i thought he may be getting stung by a coral but he has been hosting a hammer since the 1st week.

Here is my experience with the Onyx coloration with BTA so far.
Let just say that there will be NO MORE BTA in my tank anymore.

9-20-2008- I received 5 Rod's Onyx clowns and at the time, there were about 10 RBTA. The clowns took it within minutes and are all over the anemone.
As you can see, even though the clowns are still very very young, their colors are awesome! Nice jet black developing. No third stripe on any of the clowns.

11-21-2008- About two months later....The black has noticeably faded in all the clowns. You can see the third stripe starts to develop on one of the clowns.

On 12-19-2008- I decided to divide the tank in half with a baffle to separate the clowns from the anemones. I've notice the black starts to come back within a week. So after the busy holidays, I decided to sell all of the anemones. It was an extremely difficult decision for me.

01-08-09- After the RBTAs were out of the tank, I saw a S. Gigantea at a lfs and decided to roll the dice and brought it home. I introduced the new carpet during lights out so the clowns didn't see it but the next morning, they were all over it.
You can see the black is starting to come back. Now, it's getting darker and darker. The third stripe is almost completely developed in the clown that showed the first sign of the stripe. All other clowns are starting to show some white on the third stripe as well.

Minh,
Unfortunately, the gigantea didn't make it. It was doing okay for a week without any deflation then it went downhill and started to deflate several times a day. I came home from work one day and found it melting away literally where I can see "smoke" comes out of the deflated tentacles. I pulled the plug on that moment.
I'm still trying to find a suitable gigantea but this time, I'll be more careful and picky about it. After having one big anemone melt in a tank, I swear I would never want to go through that again. The tank smells and it took two weeks of constant water to get my tank back.
For now, The clowns are hosting in a gonipora and has been a lot darker. The goni was bothered by them initially but it's doing fine now.
I'll post pics later.

Here they are. Pics taken last week. The jet blacks are back. One of them(not in the pics) even has the dorsal black and it hasn't fully developed the strip yet. I'll post a pics of that one later too.

There are 6 baby clowns I saw in one of the picture with an misbared-picasso. I he slao from Rod"s or from somewhere else?
You may want to separate them. They will get aggressive and some may jump out of the tank. I also got 5 from Rod and was not able to keep them together for long. I did not loose Rod's Onyx because I separate them early any but I did loose some other baby A. percula due to jumping out of the tank.

Those are very nice clowns. My picasso is from ORA. It's the first and probably the last of the ORA clown I would get. It has the smashed in face.

I do plan on separating the clowns soon. I just have to actually get another tank set up.

Hmmmmm....very interesting, it almost seems that there might be a specific venom or chemical make up of the protective mucus layer on BTA's that seem to be affecting the black, and much darker pigmentation on the scales of a clown....

I heard that Rod is no longer selling the Onyx clowns, I checked his site and saw nothing about the clowns... I'd like to get a pair for the new tank I just had built, anybody have a direction they can point me in to finding a pair?

Same here, been looking for months. Premium Aquatics has them according to their website. I know others are breeding them but I have yet to get any info. Help a reefer out! haha

There's another Chicagoland breeder - Booyah's Reef that is rearing and selling onyx percs. The parents are from similar origins as Rod's, so you can expect the same high quality. I have a thread that I'll dig up and show updated pics - I got mine from there. I think his SN is kerusso316. PM me if you want a phone number.

Just got a PM back from kerusso. I saw that thread you are speaking of awhile back. I tried emailing him awhile ago, seems he just wants phone calls. Must be a busy guy. I'll see what I come up with. I'm so thankful he PM'ed back. =)

Busy is an understatement! Last time I was down his direction it was a zoo, with as many fish as they have there...
