Onyx vs Black and White

Can someone please tell me the difference?

onyx are perculas, B/W are ocellaris.

Are one more expensive than the other? My pair died over the weekend (power outage for 3 days. Water temp was at 57 degrees). Not sure what I had, but before I buy again, I wanted to know the difference.

Onyx are typically more expensive. The easiest way to tell them apart is that onyx typically have more orange on them. Especially on the pectoral fins.

You had black and white, or Darwinian, ocellaris.

These would be considered "onyx" by some. Others would need to see a little more black before they would consider them onyx, but not as much black as yours had.

They were 75 for a pair at a LFS. He has two more pairs available.

I just wanted to add that if that is a maroon clown in the picture with the others, don't get another one when you restock. It is not compatible with your ocellaris clowns and would likely have ended up killing them as it got older and more aggressive.

I'm sorry to hear about the losses. How long was the power out? Do you have a plan to maintain the temperature in case it happens again? I just went through a power outage recently with my tanks and was amazed at how fast the temperature started dropping.

Ostara is right. Looking at the dead fishes, I think you got two B&W Ocellaris and a Yellow stripe Maroon clown. I would recommend that you get one pair only. Maroon as it get older it will kill all the other clowns. Sorry about your loss. Power loss in the winter in the north is bad. Battery operated air pump is OK in the south but in the north the cold is just too much. You may want a converter that convert car battery in to 120 AC. Very in expensive from department/hardware store that would have save your tank but you would have to run the car all day and night.

The maroon started out as a pair that I've had for over a year. I couldn't resist the b/w when I saw them. The b/w ended up killing the larger maroon and then left the smaller maroon alone on the other side of the tank. I'm only going to get another pair of b/w once my tank is established again.

I've since ordered 3 battery operated pumps. As for a generator, the power doesn't really go out that much in Southern Cal, so I don't know if I can justify the cost to get one.

Not a generator. Just a converter that convert car battery into 120 V DC. You can get about 3-5 amps out of your car running and enough to run the tank pumps and heater. You can get it for about 20-25 dollars. I highly recommended it
