Oooodles of Ps. steenii fry!

Hey guys and gals,

My pair of steenii finally spawned! Funny thing is that I would have never guessed that they had eggs. Both fish behaved the exact same way everyday, both eagerly awaiting for me to feed as I walked by the tank and showed zero sign that there were little ones on the way.

Here is the story, I was making my feeding rounds and I noticed that the 55 they were in was really hazy at the surface to the poinof not being able to see through to the other side. Upon closer examination the haze was thousands of fry!!! First excitment then horror! Where in the world was I going to put a few thousand dottyback fry and how in the world was I going to get them all out of the broodstock tank?!

Out come the spare ten gallon tanks. Scooping as many as I could with a deli cup and placing them in the tens. Estimates are at 3000-4000 harvested with easily that many still in the broodstock tank.

Is that a normal sized spawn???

Are they going to spawn as frequently as other Psudos??

Little buggers were already eating just hatched BBS and rotifers!!

What can I expect with raising the fry (for those of you who have worked with this species) and what is the aggression like as juveniles?? The adults are meaner then anything else I have ever kept!

Thanks

.......And then there were none! Thank you PG&E!!

We had to have some major electrical work done on the grid last night the power was out from 2 AM to 7 AM and in that time I guess that the lack of O2 crashed the tank. All were dead.

So a quick recap:
Friday the 7th of July I noticed the fry and separated out roughly half into two ten gallon tanks. July 8th, 80% loss due to not enough food (rotifer cultures crashed) the survivors were eating just hatched BBS. Same numbers till monday the 10th when there were a few (25) dead on the surface with empty stomaches. Then last night.

It really kinda stinks because the remaining 75 or so were really doing well, full bellies and growing super fast!!!

There is always the next spawn ...... right!

This time I will take pictures.

You know Gresh, its OK because the female is so swollen with eggs right now. I have a feeling that there will be another swarm within the next week or so!

If anyone local wants to try raising some of the fry there will be plenty extra to go around. Just call me .
