open brain coral from japan

My Red Brain

My Red Brain

I got this guy a few weeks ago at my LFS for $52. I mostly buy corals that I can frag but this one was well worth it. He is doing great.

They used to be called Wellsophyllia radiata but are now Trachyphyllia radiata.

I haven't seen any with the rainbow colors. I'm sure they are really hard to find. I would check out some online vendors located in CA.

Very nice piece man. No, I probably wouldn't frag it either....likely not worth the risk IMO. The only time I would ever consider that is that if I had a long term, healthy, feeding and growing one, I might be tempted to take a small pizza-pie cut of tissue out of it and trying to get that to settle.

Still, more than likely to fail and certainly very possible to initiate an infection in the parent colony to boot.

Besides, you frag it and then the exclusivity factor goes down.

it amazes me how open people are about buying selling, and owning illegaly imported corals, i'm suprised that RC tolerates any of these threads. The fact that you can buy illegal corals on ebay..by searching for coral and japan never ceases to amaze me..

Most of the BS on Ebay listed as Japanese LOL is not at all .... its a catch phrase... that many are using as a sales gimmick... have you seen the dude selling LOL "Japanese Maximas" ah hahahah ....

Heres my NON Japanese Brains ... Gave both away to friends as gifts

They do not have to be Japanese to be AWESOME! :)

I purchased my brain from a friend in Cali who purchades it from a LFS, last time I checked that's not illegal. I posted the pic because it exudes the color morph of what Japanese corals collected in deeper & colder water sometimes have, also not illegal.

doctor you are right it does not have to be from japan to be nice i have 2 just like the pics of the ones you have...and i have another that alight blue color and to me i like all the colors just want a rainbow color brain........i been a good all year...come through for me santa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really seem preoccupied with the Illegal thing? Mammoth Reefer... Have you read CITES to understand what actually makes a coral legal or Illegal? its not because it rare, not because it is endangered... and furthermore just because someone says something is Japanese or from some other CITES restricted collection area does not even mean they know what they are talking about... Much like the kids selling Macadamia nuts as Crack in the 90s.. you go into every thread harping on this? while there are very many highly educated reefers in this forum who have polarized opinions on this subject I have yet to see you say anything more than hersay and conjecture.

HHHmmmm :( I havent heard them called that? I just call them open brains LOL they used to call them Trachyphyllias, Wessolophllias ect (forgive my spelling) but I think they have gotten away from that. Pacific Rose Coral is a pretty name though :)

I know it's been posted before, but here it goes again.
