Great pics Scott! Beautiful brain!

Hey I have a question for everyone on the thread, especially those of you who have a red brain (like Scott's here).....

...how big is your brain?

I just picked up one from a guy here at RC , it looks like Scott's here, and man that thing is HUGE! He's definitely my centerpiece LPS and I just love him (will post a pic soon)!:)

But I'm just wondering just how big these things could get. Mine is about 6Lx4Wx4H inches (and that's not hardly expanded, that's wakin'up mode) and sits in the sand bed under a 250w 14K MH about 24inch away from the bulb. I have a small piece of screen over the top of the glass big enough to shade him slightly but I'm wondering if it's still too much light for him. I have a horseshoe-shaped reef and there's really no where else to put him. Suggestions???

He puts out his tentacles at night (even during the day sometimes too) and he ate a small piece of krill last night for the first time. He has about 15 mouths....so I picked one! :)

Thanks guys and there are some beautiful brains out there!!!

Ok guys I'm going to try this photobucket thing...hopefully it works:

Here's my little red brain!

*notice the hermit crabs & snails are about an inch long for scale.

That's a great looking brain you have there. I haven't seen one quite that color. Mine is probably 12 inches wide and 8 inches deep when fully expanded in the evening. Tentacles are almost always out at night and usually out late in the day.

I would have to see a FTS to be able to suggest an alternative location. Mine is right on the bottom, so add the substrate and the distance of the lights from the surface, and it's probably 26 inches from the light and seems to like it fine. I run 250watt Ushio 20k DE bulbs.

Thanks Scott, although I must say you have a gi-normous brain at 12 x 8! (LOL :D)

Here's a full tank shot:

Mostly my tank has little 2-3 inch frags and small-sized LPS corals(like the golfball sized goniopora there for scale). Even that monster-looking frogspawn on the right side is only 3 heads (but one of the heads is currently splitting 3 ways! weird huh?) And the Idaho grape montipora is only light acclimating on the bottom before going up on the reef in it's permanent home. So, it won't be there much longer.

Questions:

So, you don't have any type of screen over yours? (but it's probably not sitting directly underneath the bulb is it?) Mine is 14K 250 watt MH with two supplementary 65 w PC actinics.

Now I do have two more 65w PC 10K/6500K daylight bulbs. Only one of which comes on in addition to the other lights at 1:00pm for an hour each day to help simulate the intensity of the overhead midday sun.

I was going to start up the other daylight PC bulb 15 mins/week on a timer until it reaches the same hour length in duration as the other daylight PC. (Then I'd have two 65 w daylight bulbs on for the midday sun, follow?)

...but here's what I've noticed: when the first daylight PC comes on, even though the brain is not directly underneath that bulb, it starts pulling in (as if it's too much).

I thought I read somewhere that 10K bulbs have more PAR at deeper depths than 14K or 20K bulbs. If that's true, will the brain adjust over time (he's still only a few weeks old in my tank) or should I just forego the 2nd 10K PC bulb altogether?

Sorry for so many questions...just want to take good care of these beautiful animals.

Thanks :)

I'd let it adjust for a few weeks and see what happens. I have 3 250 watt bulbs over my 6 foot tank, one of them is directly in the middle where my brain is. I don't really see any better place to put your brain in your tank. Tank looks great by the way.

Thanks Scott! I think I will just let it be (in fact, I watched it today when the extra light came on and it didn't pull back as much--good sign). And thanks for the compliments, my tank is a relatively new ecosystem in the making (just shy of 6 months) as you can probably tell. But it's definitely getting there.

Max- those are some gorgeous brains you have there too! I love the green trachy, and some day I want to get a little platygyra like yours...they are some of my favorites for sure! Just gotta find more room! Can you say bigger tank? Oh no, LOL:D
