Opinions and Personal Experience Sought

I noticed in some past threads that there was some disagreement on people's reviews of LFSs that they posted here. I don't want to start a fight among the DRC, but I am seeking these types of opinions and personal experiences. I still purchase the majority of my animals and live rock in person and I am always looking for new places in which to do this shopping.

I have done some searching for regional stores and for reviews, but a lot of what I have found consists of either just phone book type entries or reviews that may be several years old. As was just hammered home to me after a trip to MD this week, fish stores can change rapidly in their quality in a relatively small span of time. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate any comments from people who have recently shopped at the particular LFS that they are commenting on.

In general, I am interested more in the breath of livestock in a store than its dry goods scope. That Fish Place is only a 40 minute trip for me, and they cover a lot of my dry good needs, although they lack in some areas such as skimmers. Of course, I like to see that the livestock itself is healthy and being attended to properly. In addition, I appreciate livestock that is labeled both in name and in price. My final main concern is that the store does not stock those animals that are considered to be near impossible to keep alive in the confines of an aquarium -- I don't have a problem w/ special orders for particular customers, but seeing multiple ribbon eels in a tank sort of takes the fun out of shopping for me.

As for prices, they don't have to be rock bottom. I understand that places have to make money to stay in business. And it does me no good if you are basing your opinions on whether or not you personally get a discount -- I don't have a relationship w/ these stores and will not get any sort of discount. Fair pricing would be great.

Is anyone willing to give this a go and speak out on some LFS that they either love or wouldn't spend their time on? I would find it most helpful. Thanks a lot.

IMO, nothing in Northern Delaware anyway, comes anywhere near what you'll find at The Pet Place. Although the LFS here will be happy to order whatever you want, I haven't found any stores in Northern Delaware that routinely stock mid to higher level equipment, or livestock. I also think The Pet Place carries far greater livestock than any LFS's in Northern Delaware.

cant really speak 4 that petplace but the store in upper are starting to come along.
i know for a fact that green banks is uping there lighting. there going to have a halaid tank, t5 tank, and vhos. when is this going to be complete idk. the owner know the stuff he has now is $hit and he is planning on bring in his own coral.
premium aquatics gets regular ora stuff. aside from that they will usually have a few great looking pieces. there prices are cheep and there staff is fanastic.
i really like both stores.

i feel you should just know your stuff befor u go there. not saying he will give u a terrible price but im soure if u know your stuff youll have a better chance of not getting ripped off. i bought a zenia for 35$. onec i found out jon could sell me some for like 20 i was a little more then angered.
i went in there maybe a month after and i got an explanation. we had a long talk. long story short xenia ship like crap. if u can get 35 for it why not.
i do have to say that this piece was extreamly healthy and was a very beauitful specimin. he fragged this xenia off a bigger rock and i got to picek a nice mounted rock. trust me i felt like a complete idot. after the talk i understood more and was ok with it.

he also wants to do rare stuff like nuke greens, deaths,AOG,tubs and he wants to do more sps.

i would also check out frazer zoo. real nice coral. they regulary have all the coral listed above. i would call in advance cuz ive been there several times where hes trying to grow out parents.
very nice rare coral and a very knowladgable person. also good prices.

Eh, you really need to let go of the "xenia incident":p

Ive only been to frasiers once, probably about 18 months ago. I was less than impressed. To be honest, i thought it was horrible. I guess it might be worth checking out again. Im a big believer in keeping my money local and try to give Charlie at DPA a chance to get in what i want but road trips are always fun. I really want to go to exotic aquatics, ive heard the store was insane. I think Andy and I are going to do a road trip in a week or so and hit a couple of the better "local" stores, maybe we can add frasiers to the list. I woudnt mind going to Nemos again.

Thanks for the tips.
I don't feel comfortable going to Frazer Zoo, simply because I don't believe that pet stores should be selling dogs and cats.
I will check out Premium, though.

Exotic was where I was at in MD. I had been down a bit over a year ago and was impressed, despite not being able to spend much time there. This time around I had the time to really look.

They have quite a few tanks dedicated to coal, and their coral appears healthy and has nice color. They have a pretty good selection of stuff, esp. the stuff most in vogue such as zoas, sps, rics, acans. I thought the prices were a bit on the high side (esp. considering the volume that they had a lot of the frags in.)

Their live rock was expensive (at $9.00/lb, and the most it had on it was coraline, if that.)

Some of the fish and inverts are not listed on the tanks, and scientific names were used infrequently. But what really turned me off this time around were some of the inappropriate animals that they had for sale. They had multiple animals that are known to do poorly in aquariums and some angels and triggers that were very, very large (and did not appear to have come from some other captive setting.) These animals were not marked that they were special orders, and Exotic doesn't do web sales, so (IMO) you are putting a lot of faith that the right person walks through that door....

I'd recommend Frazier as a stop, Shawn - mostly for coral. IMO, it's changed quite a bit in the last 18 months. If you're a zoa fan, Mike has some good stuff. Has LPS/SPS. Gets fairly regular ORA pieces in, but they tend to go quickly.

But it can be hit or miss with (1) shipment schedules and (2) when Mike does his fraggin.

As for the cat-n-dog thing, Elysia, I tend to agree with you in general, but, personally, I think FZ might be an exception.
