Opinions: major issue with all my fish

I noticed this morning that one of my fish was breathing heavy, i come home and all fish are breathing heavy, none will eat and the skimmer is going crazy.
im pretty sure my yellow butterflyfish is a goner since he is lying upside down on the sand barely breathing. all parameters look ok and i started running all kinds of carbon, im guessing something in the air? i worked so hard to get my fish healthy and its so frustrating to not be able to do anything else and just stand by and watch them die:thumbdown

working on the water change and i just put even more carbon in there, i dont know what im going to do if i lose all my fish, this might finally be the thing that drives me out of this hobby.....

plenty of surface agitation, as far as test kits im pretty sure they are good since they all are pretty new, tried some of the old ones and got the same readings. i dont have any other explanation for this event other than something in the air. Water has not been changed since 4 days ago and i doubt something went crazy wrong with it overnight. All fish were doing great last night.

Has your Ph changed? Temp? Have you created any recent disruption in the gravel the night before, such as moving around rocks etc. I also doubt its something in the air.

Did you get a new fish ? Something might have brought BROOK into the tank ?New Clowns ? Anything die that could be toxic >cucumber ? See apple ? Check your heater for cracks ?

none of the above, checked everything i could so far and i have no explanation. There is no stray voltage, nothing died in there and nothing has been stirred. I do have a new fish but its not in the same tank so im clueless. I opened the window for awhile just to let some fresh air in and will be doing a water change in a few, other than that i dont know what im going to wake up to tomorrow morning

well yeah, i dont know if it could be that but since yesterday my gf has been putting some of that drain care stuff in the tub. It has a very distinct odor and today when i came home the smell was pretty strong in my bathroom, since my place is pretty much sealed off from the exterior im wondering if the fumes are getting into the tank? i dont even know if that makes sense, im just grabbing at whatever i can at this point.....

Wow.. Jose lets just hope nothing got into the tank that shouldn't like maybe dishwashing soap? Have you recently clean anything near your sink or near any chemicals? I remember years ago with my Freshwate Tank cleaning my fiter and ended up having dishwashing liquid on it. My fish all died- I was clueless until I saw on the intake tube some clear goop and around the surface of the tube were bubbles. Just hope it's nothing to that nature. Smart moves on running carbon ater change is a must.... Good Luck keep us posted...

i think you have found your problem.

sigh...... i dont know what else to do, just wait it out i guess and hope that some of my fish make it.

+2. Do a massive water change and run as much carbon as you can. If you do not have enough reactor space for the carbon, then put in a filter bag or even pantyhose and place bags of it in a high flow areas. If it is the fumes, it is also a good idea to turn the skimmer off ASAP b/c it is sucking up air and the toxins from the air and contributing to contaminating tank water. If you turn off the skimmer, you may want to add an air stone or powerhead pointed up at the surface to aid in oxygenation lost from the lack of skimming.

how do you know that you don't have stray voltage? Did you hook a multimeter up to the water and gauge it?

yes, i have a fluke multimeter sitting at home, luckily for me im an auto repair tech and i do a lot of electrical work both at the shop and in the garage. I keep one meter at the shop another at home.

good thinking Mitch, had not thought of that. ill see what i can do on that front, im down 1 fish already.
