Hi,
Got an ORA green birdnest 3 months ago. was doing good but didn't notice any growth tips or growth so far. also it is becoming a bit lighter in colour.
was always under medium high light and medium flow do you think I should move it to different lighting or flow?
other corals next to it are doing good wtih a fast growing mille pora next to itso I'm shocked the birdnest which should be a faster grwoer is not growing ans is becoming lighter in colour?
parameters wer fine but had a drop in Ca and MG down to around 300 for Ca and 980 for Mg already fixed that mg is now 1250 and going to 1280 while ca is at 370 and going up to 450 alk has dropped from 10.2 to 9.6 sitll none of my other corals have shown ill effects, also I noticied the colours getting a bit lighter while bringing parameters up. still it has a great PE the moment lights are on. thanks for any info on birdnests in general and if I should areald experiment with moving this one or just give itt ime after parameters are fixed.

I will tag along on this one.

I just bought one 3 days ago...I have it in medium high light with massive flow. The flow is strong enough that the polyps are slightly retracted and some of the base is showing.

I'm going to see how thick I can get it to grow.

Mine likes less light and less flow. When I put it on a high flow area, I notice that the polyps won't extend too much.

I have mine at the top of my tank, but way in the back under the center brace where it doesn't get much light. It gets low-moderate flow, and has been growing like a weed. These corals bleach really easily when they get too much light.

Though I'd post pics of when I got it and recent one for better assesment.
Do you guys agree that it's loosing colours?

mine has grown from baseball to softball size in about 6 months at the bottom of the tank on the opposite side of the tank from my vortechs. so i'd say lower light and moderate flow seems to work well.

I actually just moved mine because it was not doing good with high flow, I also moved it down a bit. So I would say moderate light and moderate to low flow.

Mine seems to like the opposite as very one else's. Mine love high light with mod/high flow. It is at the top of the tank, in the back - so not directly under the bulb.

In the your photo from a few weeks ago it looks like the coral has a lot of new growth tips that are forming. Maybe its just me but it looks pretty darn happy.

i would have to agree there seem to be more new growth, but the color is bleached out...not sure if its the camera. my is under 6 t5 half way in a 120

Indeed it's got a lot of growth tips and their getting covered with tissue but it's mucl lighter in real life to what it was when I first got it. I moved it a bit lower with just a bit less flow so now its in medium high light medium flow and will check it in a couple of weeks to assess change. Also gave a frag that I incidently broke to a friend and will see how it does in his tank to assess if its water quality issues.
Thanks for the help

I moved mine down 6 inches with less flow and it poofed up all nice and fat and has several new tips in just a few days.

The ora green bird's nest has been a very fast grower in my tank. So much that I had to cut down a colony almost the size of a volleyball into smaller pieces. Now I have 5 new colonies the size of softballs in my frag tank.

I have it half way up the tank, lots of flow.

You can check out some photos at http://www.oracorals.com

Thanks for the link. Those do look much better colored than mine.
Should be back home in 1 week after a 2 week travel I'm hoping to find an improvement in its coloration.

I've noticed that they just don't like certain tanks. I would suggest the same thing i just suggested for Montipora corals in a another thread. Lugol's solution. It has potassium which helps with the coloration in corals. Also, it doesn't seem to take a lot of nutrients to cause the zooxanthellae to overpopulate in these corals giving them the golden color. Do you do any type of Amino Acid dosing?

Not dosing amino,
and was considering starting to dose amino phyto and zooplancton however now that yo umention that a little nutrients can cause corals to start getting a golden color I'm really confused wether I should dose anything.
As for Lugol I do dose 7-8 drops with everywater change, guess I'll up that to 4-5 drops everyweek?

Had to put mine on the bottom under a rock shelf to get the intense green back. It is completely shaded.
