ORA Sps Frags

<a href=showthread.php?s=&postid=13955568#post13955568 target=_blank>Originally posted</a> by myzislow
I sold my red planet to a buddy as it is way to close to the Christmas mirabilis I already have. In my tank it was being blasted with light in the highest light zone I had. The color was very washed out and growth was also very poor in my tank. We positioned it to receive moderate, in direct lighting with very good flow in his tank and also mounted it horizontally. In just a few weeks the colors are back to being amazing with the green very prominent and the growth is definitely taking off. I do not think this coral "needs" high light to be happy and grow well. It defnitely looks better in lower light. Even if it did grow a little slower in lower light, I'd take a smaller, awesome looking coral over a larger washed out piece any day.

Do you have a picture of the xmas mirabilis?

Do you think they are the same coral? I notice that ORA always has them listed as Acropora sp. and I can not find the real names.

in the huge ocean do you think that ora got the only red and green table out there..Im sure there is a ton more out there with a ton of other names..dont get me wrong i love ora and Tyree and the others.. but i cant stand all the LE and the crazy names

AMEN acrodave. I don't subscribe to fancy made-up adjectives to jack up prices of frags.
I will, however, buy a frag named Tim Tebow

They are very similar but definitely different corals. Coralite structure differs slightly as well as the color and growth pattern. The mirabilis is a darker red/maroon with more PE for sure.

I used to ignore them but I am starting to come around to the 'pedigree' concept. It's nice to know that if I put frag X into my tank that it has the lineage of something good. I've put frags in my tank that I've regretted later. With real estate in the tank being so tight, I don't want to be disappointed again for wasting valuable space and time(!) with another 'turd coral'.

If I'm looking at a friend's tank and he/she has something awesome though...I don't care what it's called or what the pedigree is.

sometime "turd corals" turn into rainbows

On second thought...let me know when you get one and you're ready to share it. ;)

I think it is unfair though to compare a coral frag price to a ticket to a ball game, or the price of a car, or whatever.....compare them to another coral. You can get a wild colony for 50 bucks that is ten times bigger, but it will not be as colorful, and it may not even live. I know what we are paying for, but in a year or so, when there are more of them being traded among hobbyists, you will see the prices at a more realisttic price. I know you can now get the cali tort for about 30 bucks, and it used to cost 80. Now if I could just get my hands on a true oregon tort for a better price......

In some ways, you just proved my point... Tickets to the Lakers are expensive... tickets to the local high school game are not... but the games will NOT be the same either... Yugo and BMW (need I say more?)

$50 for a huge colony that either looks so-so, dies or both is not really worth it in the long run... 2 dead or ugly colonies equals one beautiful thriving Red Planet frag??? If someone didn't want to spend that much, then they could wait till the market is flooded and buy a frag from another reefer in a year or two (or longer for slower growing corals like the Oregon Tort)... You can get a Chipp's Acro for around $25 now... but try and find a German Blue Polyped or Scripp's Mille from anyone BUT another reefer now that ORA has lost the mother colonies of both

Me? I find corals I like and buy what I can afford... I don't want everything ORA has put out, but there are a few that I think are really nice and will add them as money allows... maybe in a year when they are cheaper, maybe when I get a wild hair and spend $80 on one... I also have a few wild colonies that I like and hope I am able to keep healthy and thriving... I'm not a "these are all LE and ORA na-na boo-boo" kind of guy, but I do like the option of knowing that I'm not buying a pig in a poke as well

I'm glad people like ORA, Tyree, ATL and others are there to sell us beautiful captive grown corals that are known to thrive... and I'm glad other reefers sell frags off when real estate gets slim... captive grown are hardier and often better looking and for that I'm thankful

:)

Agreed!

I also am not one to be on board with the whole "designer" corals. That is why I said I think they are overpriced. I was lucky enough to get a piece of the wild colony on two corals that tyree came out with as LE pieces. So I got them for a great price. But because I do not have any lineage, people do not want to pay even half of what Tyree charges. I think it is ridiculous, so I selll them for 15 to 20 bucks to people that want nice corals for a fair price. I do not think any frag should cost over 30 or 40 bucks tops. But I am in the minority I think.

Yeah, you can get a bigger wild colony for less than the equivalent frag. But if the colony dies, you are stuck without anything. I have not lost a single coral since going to all aquacultured frags. Not one of my corals was bought as a wild colony. I know they were wild once, but mine are second and third and fourth gen cultures. But you don't have to buy ORA or LE brand corals. There are plenty of nice corals out there that are not of these types. Not all of mine are. But I do like the ORA stuff. A lot!

Decent to fast! Depends on your tank. It grows moderately in my frag tank.

Chris....Where did you get the PP frag? I want one bad!

Matt - That's my pearlberry. :) Thanks! It grows very fast for me.

60cubed - I got the PP from Al before he lost his colony. It still grows slow for me cause it has never quite settled in.
