Orange People Eaters

I collect a lot of things from orchids to killifish to bettas to coral and this is NOTHING new. No matter what you collect, there will always be something that only a couple people have and you would have to pay top dollar to have yourself.

Obviously, there are other orange PEs out there identical to the ones from Reef Envy and eventually they will be collected en mass and spread throughout the community. Just look at the Rainbow Palys. They first came in and were listed for a "normal" price for something new. Word got out about them, and demand grew drastically making the place that had them decide to start charging $100 a polyp. They would probably still charge that if other nearly identical palys didn't start showing up all over the place.

I'm not saying the Envy Orange PE is worth $600, and if it weren't gifted to me I would not own one. But, until more are found I wouldn't expect the price to drop any because at the growth rate I'm seeing they are not going to have the "purple death affect" where they propagate fast enough for supply to meet demand

its rediculous, honestly i love zoo's but i would never ever pay 20 per polyp. Especially since they take almost a year to grow

Some folks apparently have waaaay too much money. I can think of many charities that could use the money. People, animals and reefs.

And we wonder why the world hates us. Geeez, I almost sound like a liberal. And I'm certainly NOT that.

There is a win win game,I bring 200 polyps along with me to U S,and ask one guy buy it all from me in 30$ per polyp then mail to other reefer, price will go go down very fast and I can earn a good money for a good trip

i don't see that working, as mentioned before, how will you get them through customs, or even on the plane?

i live in boulder colorado 80303/

you could ship them overnight the day before you leave, and pick them up when you arrive in the states. skrew customs.

id split 200 heads into in 4 50 polyp frags and hit up 4 diff. reefers in the states.

then we'll all sell them for a lil more than thirty, and flood the market.:D

i got an off topic question for kk, are they building that massive building that will be like a mile high, be a self contained city in itself, and house like a million people in hong kong?
saw it on discovery, thought i was in hong kong. pretty cool

I've been reading this thread for a few days, and I was waiting for someone to say, "JUST KIDDING". So I think it's time I ask this question. Is this a joke?

1. Is someone really selling this polyp for $ 600 a polyp?

2. Is there anyone here who has purchased one for $ 300, $ 400, $ 500 or $ 600?

With all due respect, does anyone have any idea what the failure rate is on a single polyp frag when shipped inappropriately is?

With all due respect, "RARE", .....rainbows have been around for years, so have the orange polyps in question. I just fragged a hung colony of rainbows because the grew like a weed. RARE, this word is used far too much. Last week a reefer with 34 post and what seems like 15 minutes in the hobby, was telling everyone what was and wasn't rare. No I'm not being cocky, far from it, some of this stuff that's out now was on the market years ago. Is just a different colored variant of others. The only true rare polyp that I have seen in years was the PD. But I can assure you, what's being referred to as the OPE and the EO's, they aren't rare because they grow slow. So if they grew extremly fast in your tank, would they still be considered rare? I have lots of colonies that grow slower than others, does that make them rare? No. So what makes you such an expert Mucho? That's my point, I'm not an expert, don't know any. What I am saying is this, or maybe I should ask the question. What makes something rare? Is it because it grows slow, NO, far from it. It might grow slow in Reefer A's tank, but what if it grows like crazy in Reefer B's tank. OK, hmmm, lets see, is it because of the high price, ...hmmm....nope......man sets that price. Soooo......hmmm....what is it then. It's availability, and it's no secret. No one goes out and says, "we're gonna dive today for PD's, OE's or VD's. When divers at many of these collection area, and new ones are being discovered all the time, when they see what they see, the hack off a chunk and bring it to the surface and it's on its way to a wholesaler or transhipper. It's rare if it's never collected, seldom found to collect or placed on the market .

Question, if I posted 3 pictures right now, all distinctly different in color, stunning, but never seen ebay, on any ID site, and not seen on any web site, would they be considered rare?

This thread has given me a great idea. Will take me a couple of months.

Mucho Reef

I don't have any frags for sale.

this really isn't a joke...i want some so that I too can grow them and sell them, but I would never pay that price. I will agree that they may potentially be fast growers, but haven't been provided the right conditions in our reef tanks, but there is every possibility that they are indeed slow growers. Possibly they are rare b/c they are only available in mainly inaccessible places. The Helfrichi(sp?) firefish is an expensive fish because they are usually found at depths greater than 80 ft...it could be the same case w/ these zoas..I guess that only time will tell

I agree, RARE is a bad word to use. Unavailable is the correct word to use.

This is the umpteenth thread on the Envy Orange PE, and for good reason. What makes a black and white maxima worth what it fetches? What makes a blue squamosa worth what it fetches? What makes a red carpet anemone worth what it fetches? Etc, etc... There are not enough to go around so supply and demand sends prices up. $600 is a bit overboard IMO, but that price was built up to and eventually paid.

I have seen countless pictures of peoples "orange" zoanthids and people asking if they are the Envy Orange. Not one has fit the bill so far. I'm not saying that makes them rare, just not available now.

I would love to know where they came from too as I'd love to have more than one polyp of them!

There is so much more I want to say about this subject and this particular polyp, but I'd better stop here.

I don't think that I would say that just because this guy has them for sale at $600/polyp doesn't mean that's the going rate. I guess IMO saying something is rare is a opinion and not so much fact. In my opinion I would consider this kind of polyp rare in the us hobby market. Unless you can point me to a place to buy one at a MUCH MUCH lower prices I guess it can't be too common.

I'm surprised the zoo guru is so surprised by this. $600 is higher than the norm, but high priced polyps have been the order of the day for a long time.

lets see what is "officially" considered rare then.

No need to bait, I don't post pictures, or should I say seldom if ever. My question was,

"IF I posted 3 pictures right now, all distinctly different in color, stunning, but never seen ebay, on any ID site, and not seen on any web site, would they be considered rare? It's a hypothetical question. It could be me, you or anyone who'll post them, the questions is still the same. If no one has seen them before, that you or I know of, does that make them rare? I just want to know what everyone thinks.

This thread is not worthless without pictures. It has reached 3 pages with only 4 different pictures. It's a simple question that I think everyone would like to hear answered. It's not directed at anyone in particular, and it's not meant to be offensive, just a discussion.

"I'm surprised the zoo guru is so surprised by this. $600 is higher than the norm, but high priced polyps have been the order of the day for a long time.",

Wow, that was a jab, LOL, I'm not surprised, that's an understatment, I'm in shock. I don't think anyone on the net knows the asking price or every frag on the market, I know I don't. When I had them a few years ago, I can't truly remember what I paid for them, but the colony was under $ 60. This is why I ask if this was a joke. If someone wants to pay that much for them, hey, that's great for them. Who can argue with that, more power to the seller and the buyer. Has anyone here purchased them for that price? If so, how are they doing? Did they maintain their color, appearance etc? Did they prosper fairly well in the long and short term?

Thanks.

anyone who pays more that 20$ per polyps is a fool. As Mucho said, ALL of these colors have been in the hobby for years. I had some morphs years ago that now would be called rare and sell for enormous amounts. there is NO rare anything in a hobby where the 'rare thing' reproduces/clones itself. If a coral is growing slow for you, it really may not for someone else...that just means you cant grow it.

Its the way the people participating in this thread think that is screwing up pricing. You should not be buying corals for the intended purpose of selling it at a huge profit. That just kills corals and perpetuates the high prices. Its threads like this that make me want to get away from zoas entirely. You guys are ruining this part of the hobby for me. thanx.

y'all people are strait intense.:D

this is like the zoanthid soap opra of pricing!!

if you can buy something for cheap and sell it for a huge profit, DO IT. GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND DEAL WITH IT!

reguardless, aquaria is still a business. saying people are ruining the hobby because the are willing to buy and sell zoas for rediculas prices, is just like your opinion, man.

if you dont want to drop $600 on one zoanthid, don't.

But don't portray both the buyer and seller as ruining the hobby, man.

(if someone can drop that much on one polyp, think how much tighter his tank is than yours)

its their choice to do whatever they want. calling the dude that has what you want a "fool" for paying more than you could/want to afford is BS.

muchos hypothetical is pretty spot on. "rare" is hreally not much more than hearsay and propoganda.

ah well. id never spend that much on one polyp. but i would if i could, so more power to those who do and did.

the real concern is that people are actually get what they pay for.
that could really be a detrament to the hobby.

honestly, i believe the seller has them at 600 because he doesn't have many left and he wants to be able to use the 600 as a value for trading; i saw him try and trade two polyps of envy orange for a purple rhinopias (sic?).
