Orange Spot Filefish

Anyone else have one?

Mine went onto prepared foods from day 1. Eats flakes, pellets, and frozen. Actually quite aggressive at feedings considering it shares a tank with two tangs, two angels, a foxface etc.

Really has simply been a great fish addition for me. Really glad i took a shot at it.

Anyone else have similar success?

LFS. Im not sure who the supplier was, but i can ask next time im in.

They had it for about two weeks, feeding on bleached acro. Hadnt started eating prepared yet.

I don't have any SPS, so i guess it had no other option in my care.

If i can figure out how to post a video i will get one up of it feeding. Have one on my phone, but im new to the whole smart phone thing, so let me see if i can find a tutorial on how to do it.

I wish you success Dmorty! They are really great fish.

I believe mine started eating flakes before the other prepared foods, but now eats pellets and frozen as well. It still prefures the flakes over the other foods though.

Congrats on your rare find! That's one of the coolest fish you can have IMO if you can get it to eat.

How long has it been in your tank?

What exactly is it eating?

I have had the fish in my display for a little over two Months. He has really fattened up. I will try to get some pics posted or a video if i can figure out how to upload. I just got new phone, but im new to the whole smart phone technology.

I actually chose to break my QT protocol on this fish and it went straight into the display. I have had better luck with picky eaters in the past getting them to eat when they can view other fish eating. I was worried about it seeing the prepared foods as edible had it been in QT by itself. I have no scientific facts to back this idea, but just something i have notice with picky eaters is that they tend to be more likely to go for prepared when they see a feeding frenzy and decide to get into the competition for food.

Fish was really skinny when i purchased it. The LFS had it a month, and it was only eating on bleached acro. Had the LFS not offered a discount i would have passed, but i just couldn't help myself.

Brought it home, placed it into the display which houses a thompsons tang, tomini tang, 4x chromis, one spot foxface, bicolor angel, lamarcks angel, yellow corris wrasse, sixline wrasse, yellow watchman goby, mottled clingfish, and 2x snowflake eels. I dont have any acro or sps in my tank, and the filefish was/is the last addition to the display.

It ate flakes on the first attempt of feeding. I was super happy, but also cautious as i have had fish eat the first day then stop all together in the past, but he never stopped.

He never stopped eating. I feed Ocean nutrition red and green flakes (i mix them and feed both when i feed flake). he seems to prefer the red flake. I also feed Omega One micro veggie pellets which he eats. The micro pellets are the only pellets i feed that he can eat because of his mouth size. I also make my own frozen mix which includes squid, octopus, shrimp, scallops, brine, mysis, etc. I just mix whatever i can find or have on hand when i make a batch and it lasts me 6 months or so before i have to mix up and freeze more.

I have had some interesting accomplishments in this display, including keeping 4x chromis together for about 9 months now. Im very happy with the current stock list, and will now be focusing my efforts on filling the tank with softies. It will be a softie dominated display.

Sounds like it's really doing well. so glad to hear that.

Obviously the frozen is working for you and making your own food is a great idea, but maybe make smaller batches so you dont have 6 month old food even if frozen. Just something to keep an eye on.

Not concerned in the slightest on the length of time it is frozen and stored. IMO its always going to be much safer than store bought prepared foods since i will never have to worry about potential thaws and refreezes prior to the food supply making it to my home.

Also it just makes much more financial sense to buy large portions of the seafood i use in the mix when it is on sale, so its in the freezer frozen regardless if its mixed or not. Im currently sitting on about 20 pounds of octopus that i got for like .50 cents a pound because the local market couldnt sell it(not a high demand for seafood in my location).

Just wanted to update and say this fish is still going strong on prepared food. Great fish. Has taken a firm liking to red ocean nutrition flakes and omega one micro veggie pellets. Will still eat frozen, but prefers the flakes and pellets most. He now ignores green flake entirely.

Awesome news Joe. I currently have a female going though the TTM now as we speak. She is such an intersting fish. I was more apprehensive about breaking my quarantine protocol , so I will be in it for the long haul.

So far...she is a good eater but has moved away from NLS pellets and flake. Luckily she takes frozen foods readily. I am going to put up a separate post on this fish for any newcomers to read. It will contain my observations, the fishes habits, etc etc.

Personally I feel that once this fish in my QT, I will be able to work on getting her back onto pellets so I can utilize my fish feeder to keep her fat.

Right now she is doing great and is maintaining her weight.

If you have any recommendations on how to get her back onto pellets, please let me know. I have a few ideas, but will wait until she in quarantine. With the TTM, I can only pollute the tank so much before I siphon food out, and do water changes to make sure the water is pristine.
