Red Sea/ XMas Island Orange Tail Emperor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been following this site for a few years now. Lots of very knowledgeable people here. I have been keeping fish for a while now and I recently (three months ago) rededicated myself to my FOWLR tank . I had started with this tank five years ago. Last year I got some sort of parasite that I was not able to diagnose even with a microscope. After a lot of reading, I tried the ick shield from New Life Spectrum coupled with lower salinity. The medicine did wonders in five days and cleared everything up. Then after ten days, 75% of the fish had open mouths and died. I had about six fish left. I kept them for six months and finally started to try again.

Tank: it is made by ATM. It is about two thousand gallons, there is a special sump room with a 300 gal sump (Rubbermaid) and a six hundred gallon refugium (just live rock and DSB). I also have six other smaller aquariums for QT. Everything is run by APEX. All pumps are Tunze (five master streams) etc. three skimmers all are H&S, Bio reactor by reef dynamics, ozone by ozotech, lighting by Kessil and UV by emperor aquatics (450W).

I would like to have a paired emperor as my main fish. I have a yellow tail Chrismas Island emperor that is about seven inched in QT. I would really like to get a red sea with an orange tail or a Christmas Island one with an orange tail. Can anyone help me with this? I know about NY aquatics etc. they never really get the true orange tail and yet I have seen members here who have some. If someone could hook me up, I would be eternally grateful. I got into this hobby because of snorkeling in the red sea two decades ago and watching the emperor and sohol tang. I would be incredibly appreciative is someone could help. Thanks.

I have attached a picture of my tank. It is 16 foot long, six feet wide and 32 inces tall. The unicorn survived and is 2 feet long, so did the French and he is 18 inches.

You might try the guy at thereefcorner.com. I've never ordered from him, but he usually post videos of the individual fish he is selling and has had some nice orange tailed emporers in the past.

Incredible tank btw.

Than you. He is the one I got my current Xmas Island emperor. He called it orange tail and it does have deeper yellows but it really is not what I am looking for. Maybe he will get one sometime. The good ones have tails that are almost red. I have seem some members here with those fish as well. I was heart broken when I lost mine. Almost gave up the hobby.

The easiest way to have a pair is to order a juvenile one from the redsea and let them pair naturally versus getting another adult and take a chance of fighting

Tank is only 2,000gal? Yawn. come back when you get a big tank. :D

jk, fantastic tank. Are you sure it's big enough? I saw one online that was 12'x3'x3' and thought it was huge, this is incredible. I'd imagine you could keep anything smaller than a bottle nose in that thing. I see that tank and can only think about what a dozen Idols in it would look like.

Sadly, I can't offer any help with your search, I hope you find the fish you're looking for.

Thanks for the feedback. So, are you saying if I got another adult there is a good chance of fighting? My plan was after QT, put them in side by side (lengthwise) 55 gal tanks each for two weeks. Then move them to my 110 QT with a separator for two weeks, them move them to my 600 Gal refugium and if they do not fight, move them to the 2000 gal.

Is it a fact that the tail will fade over time even if I feed them a good diet of krill etc. to enhance color? If so, it would not be worth the hassle to get the specific orange tail. What makes the tail orange?

I had a xmas island emperor with very deep yellow tail for five years till the parasite hit. It seemed to get more intense coloring with age.

Do you know where and how I could secure a red sea juvenile emperor?

thanks again for thef eedback.

You for sure want a Juv since all large angels are born female. The only place I know that gets Red Sea fish regularly is NYAquatics. Email Michael or call him

Dmorty217, does this mean the angel I have is a male (7") sold as Xmas island but I am not sure. You seem to know a lot about angels. Can you please look at this video and tell me if you think it is from Xmas island. The angel in this video is the one I bought:

I was hoping I could get a 10" one and try to force a pair with this one. But sounds like that might not go so well.

Shawn O: I think the type of fish kept determines is a tank is big enough or not. The unicorn I have is 24" and to tell you the truth I think my tank is a tad small for him and the French too. I think something that is 30' would be more appropriate. When the unicorn picks up speed (chasing food or something else) it runs out of space in a hurry.

I don't know how to spell a whistle of amazement, but I'm sure you can imagine it. :D I can only imagine how much that thing eats. Pellets and flake by the bottle.

If you decide to add another adult, make sure you get pictures first! I have seen too many dark yellow tail sold as orange.
