Orange Tree Gorgonian (Swiftia exserta) questions.

Reef keeper
I'm thinking about getting a Orange Tree Gorgonian (Swiftia exserta) and was wondering, how hard are they to keep and does anyone here have any?

Yes I have one that has grown pretty well in my tank. As far as how hard they are to keep I guess its all relative. They are a little easier than other non-photo gorgs but harder than any photo gorg. Harder than non-photo LPS as well. Multiple daily feedings, lots of flow, and good water quality. I'm pretty sure I've even seen mine spawn a few times.

I make a mix that will feed everything in the tank:

• Mix of RO/DI water, frozen rotifers, Cyclop-eeze, Ocean Nutrition Instant Baby Brine Shrimp, Fauna Marin Ultra Sea Fan, Ultra Min F, Ultra Clam, Ultra Min D and Elos SVC Zooplankton

and starting tonight NLS micro reef feeder

I do both manual feeding and automatic feeding with this:

I dose automatically 50mL every 90 min.

Oh, ok. If you were to pick only 3-4 foods, no more than 4, from the Funa Marine line, what would you pick for Orange Tree Gorgonian (Swiftia exserta) and Feather starfish? My guess would be Ultra Min F, Ultra Min S, and 1 or 2 others?

Probably Ultra Min F, Seafan, Min D and Clam if you can have a 4th. I'm sure they get a huge variety of plankton in the wild so if you can don't limit yourself to one particular brand or type of food. As for a crinoid star I would ask Mike (aquabacs) he's the resident expert on them :)

Okay, thanks!

+1, Moses my swiftia loved Cyclopeeze also. They eat bigger food items. Unfortunantly I lost mine. I could not figure out why just up and died. It was eating and everything.

Are you sure it was dead? Mine sheds regularly and will close up for a week or more. During that time it sheds a lot of tissue and can look like its going downhill because the dead tissue is peeling off.

Ahhh ohhh...... no, it was dead, I think. The tissue was coming off to the bone, not the usual dewaxing. Geez maybe it wasn't. Now I wonder. Actually that's good because I would like to have another. I may have been premature. Now I feel bad.
