orca skimmers

How your new skim doing?

Howd you run the supply to the skimmer?

Gravity feed From over flow or are you pumping?

Getting ready to set mine up.

Have done both. Gravity, but didn't have a valve to control it like i'd like to, so now currently with a mj600 in my drain section of sump. Got some new mesh to remesh the pump and I will be connecting it to my drain again but with a ball valve just after the 'T' on my feed line.

It's working great. :)

smack nice to see you got the rest of your skimmer.Looks like very fine bubbles. Eagles Don't worry about sched 80 pipe. Its has a much smaller iD so its better to use the 40 for the exit pipe. This will allow more water to flow. What people don't realize is the scued 80 is thick but the inside diameter of the pipe is smaller due to the pipe being thicker. You are better off using sceud 40 pipe but using scued 80 ball vales, unions, and bulkheads.Thats where the strenght comes in.Eagles get a camera now.I WANT TO SEE PICS "PRONTO"

No, I wasn't worried, as you said i like it. Just can't get schedule 80 at my local HD or lowes so i used 40 after the 80 'T'.

I will get a camera the first week of May(i get paid monthly)

I can get you sched 80 if you want. You can also try a plumbing supplier. They should carry it.Home Depot doesn't carry everything.Don't forget the pipe also weighs more.So strap it or make sure it doesn't tip anything over.I don't know how much pipe you want to use.You don't need it anyways 40 is fine. The pipe won't break or rot.I have seen pvc pipe rot out but thats mostly under hot water and grease with oils(restaurants)Drainage pipe isn't the same as potable water pvc pipe so its very durable

No, I wasn't worried, as you said i like it.

The 40 fits just fine into the 80 'T' and i plumbed it so that the white return line from the grey 'T' is almost completely hidden.

yes pipe is the same od so its fine its the inside diameter thats smaller. Both are fine just scude 80 costs more. How fine are the bubbles its producing?I am curious to see.

how long did it take for your quote request to be replied to? it has been a week and no word except the auto one that says they got the e-mail.

He is real busy as i believe this thread has brought him some new custom work business. I'm sure he will get back to you as soon as he can. I'm awaiting a call from him so when I talk to him I'll mention this thread and your tag.

Steve....coming up the riser they are some so small i would guess 1/32" and some up to at most 3/32" :)

And i'm still learning, playing, tweaking.

eagles what made you decide to switch from your Bermuda skimmer to Orca. From other posts it seems you were happy with the Bermuda skimmer.I was just wodering why you would switch skimmer since your Bermuda was new

hmm okay still waiting but may have to go for something else if no response soon. i don't wanna seem impatient, but I may re-request the quote cuz i have kinda changed my mind on some of the things i originally asked to be quoted anyway(maybe they just missed the first one i did it in the request a quote area where you just check things off... i just re-checked and i emailed monday april 2nd at 10 pm... and ive checked for an email everyday because i am excited about the idea of a completely custom skimmer.

gotya, do you think a 7.25" body, a 3.5" neck, and 28" tall this skimmer could handle 2 aqua bee pumps or would 1 be sufficient?

If you look at smackwater skimmer body its a little wider .I would go with at least 2 pumps.maybe a little larger on the neck..Hard to tell I don't think 1 pump is enough on a skimmer that size.Maybe a stronger pump like a gen-x or sedra depends what size pump aswell.I would go wider on the neck and body. You may want to use 1 stronger pump 2 0r 3 aqua b pumps. Its up to you.I don't know the size of your tank and bioload.I am no pro either at this. But a larger neck is better. If you look at the deltec skimmer that use 1 aqua be 200 the diameter is 8.5 and the height is about 22-24(less than 24) so wider and shorter seems to be the norm for 1 pump.I would go 8 inch wide with at least 2 aqua b or 1 larger pump.I would make the skimmer RC type. This will give you full use of the pump and you can feed the skimmer with another pump.

If you look at one of smacks comments you can make the neck 3.5 but use less pumps. The 8.5 diameter(body) seems to be the best size for this pump(deltec uses a body of 8.5).I would go with the diameter size.Make the skimmer a bit shorter and go with 2 pumps if you want a 3.5 neck.I still think from what I have read wider neck is better.Ask Shawn wht you options may be.He can help you with this.He has been doing this for 19 years

I just bought a bigger tank today and wanted to be able to run my skimmer externally and always wanted to run an overflow fed skimmer as well. May use a bermuda again when i get my cube in a year or so(8C).

Talked to shawn today! Apparently there was an email mishap. He pretty much responded immediately to the second email. Thinking (after my first talk with shawn) I will go with the Octopusish 3 pump(with his venturi and partial mesh mod) recirculating, an 8" body and a 4" neck. I don't have a lot of height and think i may need to go with a height in the 22" range do you guys think this will work out he says his slightly modded pumps have air output in the 800 lph area. also because of space limitations thinking i will go with a 1" gate instead of the normal 1.5... my tank is only 90g for now and will be flowing less than 200 gph through this skimmer so i think this should be fine. also because of the wide neck it will save some money on being able to leave out the removeable neck because it will be wide enough to get into for cleaning without neck removal! i love all these little design hints that come from experience. glad im looking into one of these. excited about this! Also congrats to whoever received that 3 pump beast it looks awesome and made it into the orca systems gallery!
