Hi Roger,

I just received two 6095 pumps from Premium Aquatics but have few problems.

Please see attached pictures. Why 3 of 4 magnets are bare? you can actually see the magnet sticking out. only one magnet is covered.
there is no way i will put magnet like that into my tank. What happened with quality control?

also one of that small plastic thing thing that attaches to the magnet is broken.

Please advise
thank you

All new magnet holders are bare, we switched from Neodymium magnets to Ferrite Magnets, your typical impeller magnet is ferrite and is not covered (maxijets, magdrive, smaller Eheim pumps and filters) this type of magnet does not corrode, it is a ceramic composite, because it is weaker, the entire holder cavity must be filled so there is no room for a covering. Neodymium is more powerful so the magnets were about the size of watch batteries and will corrode rapidly on contact with seawater so it must be covered. The clip piece plugs into the small magnet only, the big magnet is the outside half. The one covered magnet is a neodymium one, this transition started in February for the Nano Streams and in November for the Stream 2.

I am confused now. So somebody just put in the package one new and one old magnet??

I was planning to mount it in my overflow so the "outside" magnet will be in the water.

Also The clip piecethat plugs into the small magnet is broken!

Both halves are waterproof, however, the pump attachment can only be installed on the smaller half. It seems that one pump is a transition model and one half is a neodymium magnet, which is a bonus, they are stronger. Neodymium is a rare earth metal and this has been covered extensively on the national news and various reefsites. Neodymium prices peaked last year at 600% above the prices in 2010, they are now down a bit because so many manufacturers have done exactly what we have done. China has a virtual monopoly on rare earth metals, controlling 97% of supply and they nationalized production, it is pending a WTO hearing at this time. Besides magnets, rare earth elements are critical to fracking and China has used this leverage to take large shares of oil production projects and encourage jobs be exported to China, for example, on magnets if rather than buy the magnet, you move your production to China, you get a 25% discount (no export tax on raw materials). Most hybrid car motors are made with neodymium but this is now changing to ferrite as well, but many other devices like harddrives still require the neodymium as it is more magnet power in a much smaller package. You may have noticed other pump manufacturers had a sharp price increase late last year, rather than increase the price, we changed the magnet holders so we could keep the same price point.

Roger,
Thanks for explanation. I was just very surprised when i saw it. And just want to make sure they won't poison my tank.

I will pm you my address, I did use some duper glue but don't know it that will hold.
Thanks
