I just ordered one to these today. Anyone else use anything like this?

Temperature Guard

$250

It will automatically call up to four phone numbers when the powers goes out or if the ambient temperature in your home exceeds set parameters.

I don't know about most of you but I live slightly outside of town and in the past three years we've had about 2-5 outages a year lasting a few hours to over 6 days. Luckily, we've been home every time and I have a generator ready to go. However, I think this unit will give me a little more peace of mind.

The temp sensor will warn me if the heat or AC goes out or if Mrs. Reeferhead turns off the AC when its 95 outside again

I'm going to run it thru my GFI circuit, as it has tripped randomly several times in the past due to faulty equipment.

I considered upgrading to the ACIII ($370) as it will email you power outage notifications however this would require an additional UPS ($100-$200) and I would have to pay for email service for my cell phone, which I hate.

They sell a stripped down version which will call two numbers and only warns you of outages or if the temp drops below 45 degrees, $200.

Hope this helps some of you.

To bad you could not get it to work with the Tank temp... That would be sweet!

I'm sure I could take it apart, rewire, and water proof the temp sensor to do just that, but I'm actually more concerned about the house temp then my tank temp. With the ACJr controlling everything (heater, chiller, fans, lights) my only real concern temperature wise is the AC going out and the chiller not able to keep up or the power going out and thus nothing being controlled. This unit should notify me of both possibilities.

Eventually, I'm going to setup my aquacontroller and website to monitor all the tank parameters from a far but this should be a good fail safe for the time being.

When I do a big tank in a couple years I plan on getting a Guardian backup generator system.

Cool gadget. I'm with ya on the Guardian backup generator. Our next house will have one.

I am much more of a glutton for punnishment. I have X-10 with Homeseer set up to monitor the tanks and other stuff in the house.

You could get a 120 volt temp controller and plug the Temp Gard into it so when you have an over temp situation that it thinks it has a power failure. It just wont be able to distinguish between power or temp failures.

I could do the same thing by plugging it into my aquacontroller and setting that channel to turn off at certain temps. However, power failer notification is my primary concern.

How do you like your Homeseer setup? Does it notify you during power outages?

Homeseer is great. X-10 has some reliability issues but I upgraded a few components and now it is a lot better. Not good enough for a house alarm or to trust the MH lights though (IMHO). I have a Current light that the T5s controll the fans and the MH do not have a fan wired to them at all. So if the T5s are off and the MH come on... iit gets too hot. The X-10 can receive stray signals and turn stuff o n and off sort of randomly.

I replaced the transmitter with a WGL Designs W800 X-10 RF Receiver and also added a repeater/conditioner in the breaker box and now the stuff works well enough for everything but mission critical items.

It can call numbers, email, page, and turn on and off devices. It needs a lot of setup though. You can get sensors really cheap and use them for any onep or closed contact switch as well. There are also some modules from X10 that can be used as sensors.

If I get motivated I'll set up a guest account and you can log in and look around. PM me if I forget.

Try either way again if you like. Not sure whats up. Are you connecting from work? Some firewalls will block it. I connected up using a proxy.

There were about 15 other logins. I'm glad I usedthe guest account that can't send commands to the devices ot the lights would have been like a Pink FLoyd concert.

If you ever decide to get into X10 let me know. I can tell you all of the things NOT to do

Sorry Faz,

My PC at home bit the dust :mad2: (POS) , so I haven't tried to access your site. I'll be getting my first Mac in a few days so I'll give it a shot them.

However, I did install the Temp Alarm this weekend and it works just as advertised. Plug in play, only took about 10 minutes to setup. I killed the power and 5 minutes later I received a call on my cell phone letting me know how long the power had been out, what the temperature was, and what the high and low temperatures have been for the last day. When I don't answer my phone, it automatically calls my wife's, cool gadget . I can also call it at anytime and check the status.
