Original Leng si cap ?

About 3 years ago I bought a few corals from a fellow local reefer that was temporarily getting out of the hobby, At the time I didn't really inventory anything most of his corals were beautiful, some of them still survive in my tank.
The other day this ex-reefer came over to my house to check how his corals had done, I showed him the ones that were originally his among them a cap that was originally very small when I got from him, he told me that he had traded some corals for that cap originally from Leng si and according to him that was the original leng si cap.
I was surprise, I don't know if this is true or not but the cap sure is beautiful and very special. Funny part is that I almost lost it a while back and it turned around and recuperated fully. Since then I have given a few Frags away to several club members. Here is a picture of the coral.

Hey Roger looks like a look a-like(not that it matters) just beautiful.
I saw one a while back and as i recall it grows some mounds from inside the cap. I have a piece but it does not like my tank as it has not grown even a half an inch in a year.
This pic shows those mounds that I was refering to.

It's very nice, but I doubt it is the leng sy cap due to the thick growth structure and lack of nodules. Many people say they have the leng sy cap but very few can trace it back.

I'll try to post a little pictures set tonight of my purple rim cap collection. I have three. A regular purple rim, penn state purple rim, and leng purple rim. I just got my leng sy about 6 months back and it's finally starting to do good.

The thick growth could be that if you recall this cap died completely exept for a small quater size area in the middle, I almost took it out when I noticed that it was regenerating again and covering dead skeleton with new coral again. In any case I am not saying it is, I am commenting what the original owner is telling me.
In any case, this tracing business is really interesting, What does tracing a coral means? how do you go about tracing a coral Chris?

Hey Rog the whole tracing thing becomes difficult-sometimes its just here say.
Rafael sells a leng-sy look-alike thats very pretty

Someone is going to start a Coral registry program like they have for Dogs.

Or better yet lets have a Coral DNA registry!

The leng sy cap is one of those mysterious corals that we thought went extinct and ever since it was realized it didn't everyone claims to have it. I highly doubt the person you got it from received a frag straight from Leng himself as he wasn't one to trade much.

Anyway...when tracing a coral you ask where it has come from and trace it back much like a family tree. BUT, you must realize that many people will tend to try to make their coral more rare and appealing by giving you a false history of the coral. I have seem this many times. SO, it all come back to how much you can trust the person and verify what they are saying. If you can show proof you got a piece of PM from tyree then that's pretty good proof. But if you bought a coral from a guy tearing down his tank that claimed to have PM and just took his word then the history of that coral wouldn't be as solid. Same thing online. Some vendors are reputable and have the real deal stuff, and some vendors buy a mariculted monti and sell it as Tyree LE rainbow monti. It's all about lineage and reputability.

BTW, I got my origianl frag from an online vendor (reef ready) and am still in the process of verifying it's originality.

not that they are not cool .but i think to many people are hung up on the hole le thing. all most to the point to were if u dont have any u dont have any thing cool .

Just like any hobby there are different interests. Some like fish only and some like the collector corals. Neither is better than the other.

I'd like a piece of it no matter of its lineage!! That's one of the few monti's I don't have. Mine died and every frag of it 've gotten since then has had bad luck.

I really wish I lived closer to you guys sometimes so it didn't seem like such a mission to go up there. lol

Maybe we should have like a frag party. Not selling, just trade pictures of what everyone has available to frag and stuff. I fragged out a bunch of my sps two weeks ago and they are growng now. Its expensive to get new stuff and I'd love to just do some trading.

Anyway, great cap! ;]

Rogger, do you remember who you got the cap from? BTW, I love it! The purple rim cap has always been one of my favorites.
