Original Leng si cap ?

That is pretty funny, that cap frag on the picture is actually the one in my tank now and if you see his gallery all those corals were the ones that I got from Carlos "newmoon" I still have a few of them, like the Yellow tort, pink birdnest etc..:D

Well, my halides are off for the night, I'll get some beter pics later. Here are the three types of purple rim cap I have.

1) Regular purple rim which I have had for years...

2) Purple rim I grew from a frag from JC. This coral originated in the Penn State reef aquarium. Jc calls it his leng sy cap because it has nodules like the leng sy. It has not been traced back to Leng.

3) "True Leng Sy" I got a very small frag from Reef Ready about 6 months back. I believe the original frag originated with Atlantis Aquarium. I am still trying to trace it back to Leng. It's not big enough for the nodules yet, but we'll see what happens.

I guess we need to find out from Ralph were did he get it, if it is all from one or multiple colonies ?
Who knows, maybe leng si bought his original cap from Ralph, that would be too funny :D

This has already been done. Ralph's colony has no relation to Leng's colony.

While we are on the cap subject, does anyone have any other weird ones? The only other one I have is the atlantis pink polyped one.

I'm ashamed after I saw yours LOL
Hey Roger and Chris - the thread that discusses the cap is from 2000-2001.

I used to surf RC but never got into the forums and what not. I got mine from Rafael(thru LFS)-with my frag pack a while back(7 months or so)

Anyways here's that thread from the original sources and the whole argument back and forth.

As far as my pics I almost gave up on this cap- its been pretty much everywhere in my tank, up down sideways w/o much to show, unusual for a frkin cap . Just my luck ahhh!

2 months ago I shoved her in a corner and yesterday when i saw this thread looked at it and it has grown some-go figure.
I moved it today attached it and took some pics.

Love those green polyps! BTW, I am close to tracing the frag all the way back to Leng. My frag came from Matt at Reef Ready. Matt's frag came from Ming at Atlantis Aquarium. Ming's frag came from Mike Paletta years ago. Mike's Frag came from Steve Tyree. Steve's frag came from Leng. The only link which is not set in stone is the link from Mike to Ming. I am not 100% sure that it was actually the Leng Sy cap that Ming got. Still looking into it.

steve and greg,

Well it appears that the original Leng Sy was lost. I have seen no substantial evidence that anyone kept it going for more then a year. So in this case the linneage issue is a moot point. Now if someone is falsely claiming to have the correct linneage when they dont, that is another issue and one that should be dealt with, since there are collectors out there who have been paying $200 or more for the 'real Leng Sy'. I have sold no such corals no have ever claimed to have had the 'real Leng Sy', since 1996. It may turn out that the linneage can be established, but it has not been established as of yet IMHO. If you are not into the linneage issue, no big deal. There are however reef collectors who are.

What we are debating now is who may have the best copy. A purple edge on a dark green Monti with bright green polyps is a monti that is similar to Lengs in color. The width of the purple edge and the height of the nodules has not been duplicated by any other monti that I have seen images of. Rafael's monti is the closest I have seen to date. If anyone else has something similar please post images or links to images.

I guess this settles it, this is the closest thing to the original.

caps and other things

caps and other things

I've been working really hard on expanding my monti collection. Other than the red cap, green cap, grape undata which we probably all have. Here's a few things you guys might appreciate. ;p

I have the green with blue polyp cap (no pics).

Purple with purple/blue polyps cap (pics are mother colony of the guy I got it from). And a frag with only some of the polyps showing. My own are coloring up nicely and I have a ton of it since he sent me about 10+" worth.

Green polyp monasteriata.

Emerald green m turtlensis? It has nodules and is pretty slow growing compared to a green cap.

Green with pink rim confusa/undata. Fast grower and definately a nice pinkish rim, not brown. Thot I had a better pc, but must have erased it.
greenpinkishrimundata.jpg

Unusual green plating confusa? Mother colony pic is old, has turned mostly bright green like the frag pic.

Blueberry polyp with yellowish base, not cap, but seems to grow too fast/thin for peltiformis. This thing doesn't like me cause my lights are getting old. It used to look really nice, hopefully will color up when I move it to the new sps tank.

Super slow growing green on green monasteriata?
applemonasteriata.jpg

Coloring up my green with (pretty sure will have) blue polyps m verrucosa. It lost color after I got it cause I had to store it at the bottom of my tank for the first month or so. Pics are before I bought it from Reefer Madness.

That's all for now. Really want some of the pink polyp cap, leng sy, and green with purple rim cap.

What a monster Johnny has created huh? :D

Johnny, those are really pretty corals, as much as I like Cap's they take a lot of space as they grow, It will be nice to have a cap dedicated tank!......HUMM what an idea! :D

Very nice stuff! Real or not, its a good thing I don't care so much about its history. I just like the coloring and how it looks as well as how its doing in my tank.
