any updates? any other buyers?

Where did LEDME go and his light & pics?

The only reason that I posted in this tree, is to share some information about new led light
In good educated positive way, and bring some add information to everyone .
After I saw here the attitude and the criticism I stopped post.
Any way I don't have more information to share that you can not find in the internet,
Photos review etc.
And can get more information in captive aquatics blog
That posted by a Marine Biology,
http://blog.captive-aquatics.com/captive_aquatics/2010/09/orphek-pr-156-reef-aquarium-led-light-review.html
I hope I answered your questions.
p.s (If this is span take out my post)

At this time i do not have any updates on the lights. My new aquarium (96 x 36 x24) has had a delay from the manufacture. It should be ready any day now, than I can start the build and review of the lights.

These fixtures have been out for quite a while now, but still no one has a real good review about them. Well except for captive-aquatics, and I'm always more interested to hear what "real" users say about items.

The guy that runs Captive Aquatics is a "real" user...he owns an aquarium design company, and what works probably matters to him. Plus, I think most "ahead of the curve types" aren't going to be posting on RC...

You're probably right, I bet most of our DIY'ers aren't "ahead of the curve," but the simple fact that the Captive Aquatics review is the ONLY one I've been able to find after 6 months or so and the fact that 3 out of your 5 post seem to be just pushing for Orphek lights is sightly suspicious.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're bad lighting...They look great to me, a little on the lower side of efficiency from the datasheets, but very well made from the pictures I've seen. When aquamn1999 gets his all set up I'd more than interested in his review.

+1 the lack of information from users and other review sites on this fixture is mind boggling, it is not an ahead of the curve fixture, many are out before it, and we have plenty of data on them, maxpect, acan lighting eco-lamp, aqua illumination etc etc.. I really like the look of it and the data put out from the company says it should be ok on 30" deep tank, we'll see about that, why only one person was preview this unit does not make sense, we just had macna why was it not on display there, I know for a fact they read thread this so please get the light out to more aquarium reviewers, if you dont know who they are pm me I'll give you a few!

and Orphek dont get us wrong we just want more real data, the article from CA sounded more like marketing than a review

Yep, I'm a fan of Orphek. Is their fixture ahead of the curve? Maybe - I like it. However, it's their diode that I'm impressed with - it makes Cree and Luxeon essentially useless, for lack of a better word. I just wish they had a more extensive product line, but then again, they just launched 2 months ago (not 6, lol)!

I still fail to see what you're so impressed with their diodes. Sure they have some high kelvin rating, but they're only getting around 160lm per diode. At 2w a piece they're only getting 80lm/w, not too bad actually, but not the greatest....so I fail to see how they make Cree and Luxeons useless.

And as far as the company launching 2 months ago, that might have been their "official launch" but I have emails from Simone going back a few months before that...

At the price they were selling before their "official launch" they would have been a good deal. I was on the edge of buying 4 of them for my tank, but I really didn't get the information I wanted about the specs of everything, so I passed and then the price skyrocketed. Now they're asking $1890 for 3 of them when a few months ago they were only $1650 for 4 of them...

You haven't read the spectrograph, have you?

There is more to a diode than simply a power ration. Spectrum, PAR, PUR, and CRI all play a role. There is no diode available from Cree or Luxeon that works for aquarium use that produces adequate violet, red, and orange spectrum. Orphek's diode has a spectral range of 400nm to 760nm, something no other diode offers, and due to the peaks, offers the highest PUR of any diode (simply quoting PAR is nearing "watts per gallon" in terms of uselessness...). This is why I'm a fan. Incidentally, the efficiency is 88 lm/W at 2 watts.

Too expensive? It's the same price as my Panorama fixture from Ecoxotic, and with at least double the output?

Have you tried putting Cree's over anything purple? It simply looks gray, or blue gray, or blue, which sucks for me, seeing as I've bought most Cree and luxeon based fixtures. Live and learn with new tech! ><

Overall, I'm a fan of LED lighting, and quality. Orphek happens to have the best of both right now (take apart their fixture, then take apart, say, an Aquaillumination fixture, and tell me which one will rust out internally first - being an avionics tech should give you an appreciation for quality components 'under the hood'), even if their product offering is currently limited, with them being a new company and all. If someone else comes along and makes a better diode, I'll be a fan of them. Until then... :)

Just curious if anyone has any updates on putting an Orphek lighting system over his/her tank and what the over all impression is. Thanks.

I don't know if you are watching nineball's thread from Canada but Mr. Wilson has ordered one of these fixtures to test for that tank build. I am holding off to purchase based upon that info. I plan at this point to get one of the orphek lights. I am running 2 LED panels that are doing just fine for my softies. I know I could not do any more sensitive softies or many LPS/SPS corals at this point in time but I plan to upgrade.

Anyway, the Orphek fixture is rumored to be a LOT better under the hood. I emailed them and asked about dimming, the ability to control the number of lights on and other stuff. They don't have plans that are in place apparently yet but most of those features are for us not the corals so much.

I personally would prefer to be able to ramp up the number of lights from a few to "all on" over a few hours but it's not a deal breaker for me. There are a ton of beautiful and successful tanks on here that the lights just go on or off without too many changes. Lights on- Lights off.

Kind of make me think Henry Ford with his first auto.

"They can have any color they want as long as it's black."

msr224 - thanks for the info - I'll try to follow that thread. The price on those lights are pretty attractive. A unit costs $750 - I wonder if they're willing to go down south toward the introductory price they had a while ago. That might make me take the leap.

I already tried that route via emailing and asking. NOPE. They were losing money at the introductory price in order to get on the market. Too bad....A day late and a few dollars short for both of us...Oh well...what can ya do?

I was quoted a 15% discount if I buy 4 (is that good deal?). Even then I don't know if I want to be on the bleeding edge, if you know what I mean.

With this being a new product i wouldnt expect to find too much of a better deal anywhere but ya never know. That's save ya $60 plus they don't charge for shipping right now.

I know what you mean about the bleeding edge.

I newly back into the hobby after a LONG absence and am wanting to do the right thing...can you tell me for sure what that is? LOL

According to Simone at Orphek USA $750 is the final price so it may not hurt to wait a few weeks and see what happens after they get on in to test on nineball's thread.

let me know what you plan to do. I'm gonna PM ya something....
