Oseymour's Red Sea Reefer 350 (75 gallon) Build Thread

I'm running 2 xr30s on my reefer 250 and wouldn't change it. Currently have the wide angle lense, and growth is there. Light is important, but it works hand in hand with nutrition.

It's been a while since I updated this thread.

Here are some photos I just took with an iPhone7

Fish stocking is now

  • One spot foxface
  • Yellow coris wrasse
  • 3 leopard wrasses
  • Copperband butterfly
  • Redhead solon fairy wrasse
  • Red Scooter Dragonet
  • Coral Beauty
  • Flame Angel
  • 2 chromis - started with 5.
  • Female lyretail anthias

Tangs
  • Naso tang about 4 inches - will need a new home soon
  • Yellow tang about 4 inches.
  • Hippos Tang about 4 inches - will need a new home soon

I'm all for re-homing fish but once I do this batch I'll probably go with fish that can stay for at least 2 years. That's when I expect to move to a bigger place plus the corals are getting bigger and it's going to be a pain to catch them.

I redid my manifold. It was my first time doing any type of tank plumbing and I made some mistakes - plus I used mismatched plumbing. And it was a chance to add some new toys.

New manifold with Neptune Flow monitoring kit.

According to Neptune's flow monitoring kits - with 3/4 inch plumbing I get about 400gph going to the display and 100 going to my refugium and zeovit reactor. Lower than what I expected.

I moved to the Zeovit system. I'm using a Skimz External Zeovit reactor.

Vinegar dosing was keeping my parameters in check but I wasn't getting the colors I wanted so I moved to Zeovit.

It definitely works - I'm seeing great colors and growth. Here is a youtube video from a couple months ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxP4xpXhuII&t=0m33s

Now the drawback with zeovit is system and you have to follow it. It's a pain with a bunch of different bottles and supplements.
I moved to the tablets to try and lessen the tasks but I don't think it works as well as the liquid supplements.

Click on the photo for a recent top down video of the tank. I've been in the hobby 5 or 6 years and this is the happiest I've been with my tank.

I wish there was a way to embed the video without sending someone off to flikr.

Looks great. Top down views are always fun. They do a good job of showing off colors. Is that a head high view or do you have to get up on a stool to see the top down.

Sorry for waking up this thread ;) I am just about to put together a reefer 350 myself and was wondering about your flow pumps. It seems as if you changed to a gyre. I was very happy with mine in my small tank but wondered if you had any recommendation for this bigger one. Which one are you using and are you happy with it? Thank you so much for your input and gorgeous tank!

No worries.

Currently I'm using the Gyre XF230 on one side and an MP40 on the other. They are never on at the same time but the flow changes throughout the day. I like the Gyres but I think they require more routine maintenance than other pumps. If I had to do it again I would do the Gyre XF250 and run it lower.

If you never plan on using 2 gyres. The Icecap 3k Gyre is a good pump to use.

Cheers! I do think about using two pumps. Thinking about having them left and right of the return nozzle. Should be least obvious. Would also allow me to have different flows in the left and right part of the tank.

Absolutely agree with your observation that they need more service. Mine need cleaning at least once a month.

FTS?
Are you still using the ap700, and if so do you like it?

Corey

I'm not using the AP700 now. I'm running the Aquatic Life T5 Hybrid with 2 Kessil 360.

To get full coverage I needed to either raise the AP700 high or add another unit. My wife didn't like the unit 18 inches above the tank as the light spillover was blinding when watching TV. Also the software on the AP700 at the time was terrible and linking two units together was a pain. I don't know if it is better now but I waited until a year after release.
