Oseymour's Red Sea Reefer 350 (75 gallon) Build Thread

Added 2 Radion XR30 G4 Pros yesterday. I tried to get some G3 used on the forums here but the sellers were asking some ridiculous prices (which is there right). I just went ahead and added the few hundred dollars and got the newest with full warranty and all the BRS points for consumables. And I saw that the prices on the G3 just dropped - glad i didn't pull the trigger.

Initial observations

  • Ecosmart Live is much easier to program than the Kessil App
  • The Kessil Color blending is much better. I can definately see the separation of the different light channels
  • Kessil shimmer is better but the Kessil shimmer was giving me a headache
  • With the radions, there is less light spillage in the living room. I think this is because the radions are lower to the tank. The Kessil AP700 light spread was high. This is a plus for my wife.

Looking good. Just went out and bought a tub today to start curing dry rock for my future 425XL build. Was going to cure it with a skimmer, so need to figure out which one

I cured pukani without a skimmer. It took me 4 weeks, and I only ran carbon. The first week was rough as it stunk with all the die off on the rocks. I did the first week with just RO water and then the other 3 with heated saltwater. Very high flow.

No algae or phosphate issues. I don't believe that rocks all of a sudden start to leach phosphates later. Do a good cure and you should be good.

And good luck with the build!

Nice tank I saw your thread on the Eco Tech forum and I followed you here. Nice lights a couple of questions.

Eco Tech noob here Do the lights have a built in controller?

When you feed your tank do you turn off your return pump?

They don't have a built in controller. I had to purchase a Reeflink.

I turn off my return pump when I feed. I have an Apex so when I hit feed mode it shuts off the skimmer, return pump and other equipment and turns them back on after about 15 minutes.

Good looking tank. I think you will like the radions based on some of my readings. Any plans to add more fish?

hey oseymour, great tank. can I ask a few questions?
1. Are you still happy with the SM163? Any advice or recomendations with this one? How long did it take you to dial in and what;s you water level?
2. For the Tunze 6055 powerheads, how did you decide how to point them, etc.? From the manual I saw the recommended back wall corners but pointed to the center from either side. Did you position yours all because of coral placement?

Thanks for taking a read and for your advice. jw

Sorry for the late responses. I didn't see the notifications of new posts.

I didn't have any plans to add more fish at the time but as you'll see when I post new pictures. I added a few more.

  1. Yes I am still happy with the SM163. It's the best performing skimmer I've had. I tweak it periodically as I've increased my bioload but it's skimming great.
  2. At the time I positioned my Tunzes with the main goal in mind to hide them in the tank. I've since changed the positions to eliminate dead spots and to account for growth which was blocking some areas.

Love your copper band (my favorite fish)... What is your QT process for your fish?

In the past I didn't quarantine, just drip acclimate and add them to the tank. Now I have a $10 glass tank with a HOB filter and a small powerhead that I use to acclimate. I live in an apartment so space is small so only set it up when I need it. Fish are treated for ich and with prazi with a couple of medicines and TTM for about a month.

Here is a full tank shot I took today

I'm really happy with how the tank is progressing.

Stocking list is

  • Yellow Tang about 3.5 inches
  • Hippo Tang about 3 inches
  • Blond Nase about 2 inches (This is my wife's purchase and she knows that we'll probably have to re-home this fish. It will be a miracle if we found a house, moved and have a new giant tank setup by the time this fish needs a new tank)
  • Coral Beauty - about 2 inches
  • Flame Angel - about 2 inches
  • Lyretail Anthias Male - about 2.5 inches
  • Lyretail Anthias Female - about 2 inches
  • Christmas Wrasse
  • Leopard Wrasse
  • Red Dragonette
  • One Spot Foxface
  • 2 Oscellaris clowns

One of the big changes I made it to Radion G4. The shimmer is not as nice as the Kessils but I'm still happy with them. I don't think they are significantly better than the Kessils but the Ecosmart software is much better than what Kessil had.

Fish hanging out.

My Euphyllia garden filling in nicely

Zoa garden - the colors look a bit muted. I'm using the Red Sea trace elements program to try and bring out the colors.

Left side of the tank with frags. All these frags were from trades with local reefers.

I've had this brain coral for about 2 years with really no growth. I've always had it in the sandbed. My LFS recommended I take it off the sand and the growth has exploded in the 2 months since. It added a new head and looks like another is forming. Christmas wrasse hanging out.

Shot of my sump.

Small refugium on the right is used to breed pods for the dragonette and wrasses. Filled with caluerpa and cheato.

Skimz SM163 DC skimmer still performing well

Carbon and GFO reactors.

The other side which is not pictured has 2 Neptune DOS units, a Neptune DDR and my other electricals - it's a mess over there.

So do you believe your system is ICH free? Do you QT corals for 72 days (fallow period of ICH) to ensure you can't transfer ich that way?

Everything looks great, love your fish selection.

Thanks Brieninsac

I think my system is ich free. When the tank was new I never paid much attention to it. Now that the system is stocked I'm scared of losing my precious livestock and that's why I started quarantining fish for 30 days before they go in the display.

As for corals and diseases. I never thought about that too much until recently - I do a multi stage dip and now corals are placed in my son's 10 gallon nano for a couple of weeks before they go in the main tank. I don't have the space to setup anything better right now. Right now the 10 gallon nano is lower risk and lower investment than the main tank.
