Oseymour's Red Sea Reefer 350 (75 gallon) Build Thread

If you have an apex why do you need the reeflink?

Out of the box the Apex does not control Ecotech equipment - I would have to get a WXM module.

The WXM is $125. The Reeflink is $100 PLUS the Reeflink controls my Vectra which the WXM doesn't.

Based on the above it was a no brainer plus the added redundancy with two different systems.

EDIT: My son has a 10 gallon nano in his bedroom and the Reeflink also programs the MP10 on that tank.

You are using your ATO as a refugium! That's pretty cool.

At 3 gallons I think it's too small for nutrient export but it grows a lot of pods. I have a scooter blenny and wrasses in the main tank and the refugium grows pods to keep them happy.

Following along too ! I was so impressed with these Red Sea Reefer tanks that I had to grab a 170 to try out for myself (actually have your old Kessil 360we on it !) . So far, I really like it and yes, it will be very quiet ! Its quiet enough for me and I am kind of a stickler on my tanks being , well ......... very quiet !
Good call on the 3155 . The only short coming on the Reefer tanks is that useless Red Sea top off system. I re-purposed my red sea top off reservoir into a refugium (pics are in the Red Sea Reefer thread) .
I would caution on using the main pump for anything else but a return pump. Even the slightest variance in pump pressure for any reason ,even barometric pressure changes and water level that the pump is running in, will change the pump flow ever so slightly that it will be hard to keep the tuned overflow adjusted perfectly . Adding reactors to that , will just compound things . Try it ..........but you may have issues keeping the tuned downflow adjustment rock solid.
Other thank that ..........your equipment list looks impressive. That AP 700 should be a perfect match for that tank.
Good luck on the build !
Where is the Red Sea reefer thread?

I upgraded to the new Apex along with an extra EB8. Also swapped out my MJ1200 for running my reactor to the Neptune PMUP.

The PMUP handles head pressure a lot better, the flow through my reactor would trickle to nothing within 2 or so days and the PMUP has been pushing flow through it for 7 days now. I'm going to leave it in to see how long before flow slows down considerably.

New 2016 Apex
2 EB832
2 DOS Units
Neptune DDR

I build a little cabinet to hold my electronics so I don't have to mess up my stand anymore.

Also because I'm seeing some cyano, I swapped out my 2 parts vinegar 1 part vodka carbon dosing mix and I'm going 100% vinegar for a while to see if that helps.

About a week ago I upgraded to the Neptune PMUP from an MJ1200 for my carbon reactor. In the year plus I've been doing that when the carbon gets clogged the flow simply stops. With the new Neptune Pump - the pressure is so high that it disconnected.

I should've used clamps but that was never an issue before.

I had to run to Home Depot and rent the Rug Doctor and bought a huge fan.

Realized today that my alk, calcium and nitrate test kits have been expired for a while now.

I ordered some from BRS and it will be here Saturday. I hope my parameters were not far off.

Ouch, spillage on carpet.
Glad you caught it, it would've been much worst.

Here is a video of a 10 gallon nano I started in December for my 2 sons.

Going great so far.

Oseymour,

How have the Radions done so far for the corals' health? Any changes from the kessils you can comment on? Do you see shadowing issues?

Nice high tech little tank! Great job and nice video!

The Radions have been great. I've seen good growth.

I gotta be honest - If I had the choice of 2 Radions vs 2 Kessil AP700 then I would get the Kessils. The spread is better and you can't beat the shimmer on Kessils.

For ease of use and software then the Radions win. That's why I switched, I had issues with the Kessil software when I was running one unit and I didn't trust having to sync two units. I heard they did a major update a few months ago and issues were fixed but I waited a year.

I like the AP700, and agree with the shimmer and beauty it brings. If I ran an lps only tank, there is no doubt I would run kessils. I have an sps only tank, however and I just cant say Ive seen great results with the light for that type of coral. There is shadowing issues regrdless of how well it covers, would you agree?

The radions G4 seem like my choice for Leds, but I saw one at the LFS and it throws way too much light to the viewer's eye.

This is my personal experience.

I have a 4 foot tank and if you ask me which one would provide better overall coverage with the least shadowing I would say 2 AP700 vs 2 Radion G4.

I had a single AP700 covering most of my 4 foot tank. It was about 18 inches high - my aquascape and coral placement prevented light from reaching the edges. If you place SPS in the center 18 inches and put the lower light corals at the edges then it can work.

There is no way a single G4 is covering a single 4 foot tank no matter how high you place it or where you place corals.

That's why I'll say the Kessils offer better coverage.

My tank is in my living room and I do notice that the G4 is harder to look at - especially when looking at the lights or near the top of the tank. It's something about the lenses being outside the main light housing - maybe there is more light spillage to the sides. I can't put my finger on why. I'll have to pay more attention to it when the lights come on tomorrow.
