I'm considering purchasing this for my auto top off. While reading about these on Wet Web Media, they state that this unit has a maximum head of about 87". I am under the impression that head is defined as "vertical" distance not horizantal, or if the horizantal distance does figure in, it's not equal to the vertical distance.

That said I'd have to pump up from my holding tank about two foot and then run about six feet to my sump, then up and over about sixteen inches. So am I looking at about 40" of head (vertical) or 112" of head?

You are correct, head pressure is defined as "vertical" distance. You will add some resistance due to total length, but not much.
