Osmolator (5017) runs on power up. Can it not?

Is there any way to prevent an Osmolator 5017 from running for ten seconds when it gets power?

The chamber I have it in is small enough that (depending on when it ran last), it's enough to trigger the high-water alarm.

I've seen in other places that some people limit the flow from the pump. I've burned through a couple pumps over the years, and would rather not do anything that might damage them.

If there's nothing to be done, I'll probably move the high-water alarm, but I thought I'd ask.

This cannot be changed, it is due to the time needed for the capacitor to charge up and the optic sensor to actually "wake up". A valve will not harm the pump, it actually lowers the energy consumption and if anything should extend the life. If this is osmolator is from 2012 or newer you should have a potentiometer inside the controller that will also let you turn down the pump.
