OT: Any hunters?

Hi All,

Just moved here from the east. I've started getting back into reefkeeping with a new tank and so far thats going well, but I'd also like to get into hunting. I took care of the hunter ed. class this weekend but am still at a bit of a loss on where/how best to get started, so I was just looking for a little advice on where to shop, where to hunt, any general local advice, etc. Similar to reefkeeping, learned the hard way that its better to get the advice of some experienced people (as opposed to the folks at Petco) before jumping into a new hobby. Thanks a lot.

Hey some of those people from Petco are members here. Some are better than others, but still, play nice. I haven't been hunting out here. Too many hippies at my job would be upset. But good hunting to ya.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend/generalize. When I was 13ish and set up my first tank, I wound up with a 29g with 2 lions, a snowflake, and an undulate trigger under the guidance of Petco salesman. Just been bitter ever since.

Big game rifle season just got underway. You just missed the Archery and Muzzleloader seasons. You can buy an over the counter deer, elk, and/or bear tags for some areas since you missed the license drawing in April, but if you havn't been in Colorado for 6 consecutive months you will have to pay for an out of state license. Big difference, A bull elk tag is $496/out of state VS. $46 for Colorado resident. Info can be found on the Colo DOW site: www.wildlife.state.co.us . Stores to go to are Sportsmans Warehouse, Gander Mountain, Limited hunting supplies at Bass Pro Shops, but next year we should get a Cabelas in town. For now it is a 3 hr drive to Sidney Nebraska for the nearest Cabela's store.

Better than 80% of Colorado is public lands so talk to the store employees, DOW, and forest rangers are all good resources for good areas. DOW comes out with a data sheet detailing success rate of limited license draws and area success rate for all game units sometime in Feb/March. Just in time for the April application deadline for big game limited draw licenses.

If after all that and you still need an area to hunt just PM me and I can point you in the right direction depending on what type of hunting you want to do.

Good luck with both hobbies.

Best place to hunt in the state is Ft Carson ;=). Huge herd of Elk and they are used to humans being in their areas. Don't expect them to come eat out of your hand though!

Actually in that area I think the Air Force Academy is even better for Deer and Elk. They will eat out of your hand and they have quite a few tags available there. Both Ft. Carson and A.F. Academy have limited access. The herds have to be thinned out but not very many want to do that kind of hunting.

I hunt up past steam boat and have had great luck!! If you want to go this weekend im leaving fri morning, If you have a 4 wheeler loader up and lets go! Shoot me a pm if your interisted.

I'm a hippy at heart but I still like to kill and eat things. Everything and I mean everything goes really well with fava beans and a nice chianti. Slurple slurp. If you like exotic you can try drawing for Ibex and Oryx in NM. Hunting around White Sands is outstanding.
