OT: Attention Gamers

Last I checked the PS3 was only $50 more, and you can send in for 5 free bluray movies which more than makes up for the $50...

If you want an Xbox to play HD DVD's youre going to shell out $550+.... A PS3 that plays BluRays, and comes with 6 movies is $399. :D

So to say ANYTHING about an outrageous prices is incorrect.

Im more of a Sony guy myself, so I have a PS3. I like the Xbox 360 menus and dashboard better, but once PS3 Home comes out, I think the Sony will pull ahead IMO.

I agree. I have the PS3 and Wii.

We got our 360 for $394 with 3 games(Halo 3, Forza 2, Ultimate Alliance) 3 months of Xbox Live Gold, 2 Wireless controllers, and a carrying bag. It was also the pro version, not the arcade version. We found a promotion code to get it shipped for $.97 also. I don't think you will find a deal like that on PS3 next Christmas.

It is pretty close this year already... the $399 PS3 comes with (6) bluray movies (the same value as 3 games, just not enough of a library of games to put into a game pack yet.), Sony's web service is free (won't run out like 3 months of "gold" service), and one controller (so youd need to buy another one).... Not that far off from your $394 buy.

A carrying bag is more of a "gimmick" add-on IMO. I dont think I've ever seen anyone pack up their gaming system and bring it somewhere...

It is a HD movie player already (an upgrade you have to pay for on XBOX) so I would say that's a VERY good deal...

People have this outlook that the PS3 is so ridiculously overpriced, but in fact it's not.... When you factor in the BluRay player you're actually coming out ahead....

Well I did consider the Blue Ray option. I know you can play HD dvd on the xbox, but you have to buy an extra component to do that from what I have read and that brings up the price even more.

The PS3 is a much better buy given the fact that you get 5 Blue Ray movies and free Live service. Is it worth the extra $100 for the 80gb version???

lol

by the way....i am now VERY addicted to COD4....
(call of duty 4 modern warfare) ;)

So for Christmas I got COD4 and Rockband for the 360 and Mario Galaxy for the Wii. Ya, I'll be pretty set for a long time. Rockband is just awesome with 4 people playing! Mario Galaxy is as fun of a game as I've played in a while and the graphics on COD4 are just mind blowing!

Steri...i agree...COD4 and rockband are friggin awesome ;)

Gixxer, for $399 I got my system (which plays HD movies out of the box) a controller, A free game and 2 movies at time of purchase. And i also got to send in for 6 more blu ray movies.

And best of all.....I don't have to worry about the Red ring of death that has plauged the 360 since it's inception. ;)

I know the bag is not a need. I got the HDMI converter with mine. Problem is, none of my TV's are even HD. I don't even want to get into the Blu-ray thing at this time.

lol

My money is on Blu Ray....but 2008 will probably decide....course...it'll all end up being digital downloadable content sooner or later

I think it all depends on what you want...
If your main reason is a system with a ton of games: 360
If you want an HD player also: PS3

I've always been a Nintendo fan, so going into buying the PS3 I was not biased at all and I looked at the pros and cons of both systems and for me the PS3 was the right fit. The wii is such a good party system that i will definitely get that next ;)

Oh and as far as 80 or 40.

I didn't think the extra $100 was worth it for backwards capability ( i have no interest in PS1 or 2 games)
2 extra USB ports (buy a hub)
and the hardrive is easily replaceable.

I got the Wii for the wife and she loves it. That's covered. ;)

I have always had PS's in the past so I automatically lean that way this time. I like racing games and think PS3 offers better games in that respect. GT3 and up. I love the fact that Blue Ray is with the PS3 which is what will be the next thing out I feel.

Have you compared the 2 formats side by side? Blue Ray/ HD

I can tell a difference in the quality myself. The pricing is scaring people away right now I think, but that will all change in a matter of time.

I have not compared. I thought the only major differance was BluRay has a much larger capacity...

Also, i think bluray sales are winning 2-1 right now????

So PS3 it is huh???

Do I go for the big one and get the 80g or is the 40g enough?

I wouldn't be so fast to say that. Some like 360, some like PS3. If someone has bought a PS3, they will defend their expensive purchase to the death. If someone else bought a 360, they will defend their expensive purchase to the death.

Both systems have many ups and downs, and to not admit that would just be niave.

360 has tons more games then PS3, but Live has been acting up lately which sucks, and others have had issues with the earlier model platforms (although my understanding is that this is no longer a situation in the newer model platforms). The HD graphic for 360 are awesome. I haven't played PS3 enough to gage PS3, but I can say the 360 in HD is awesome.

The PS3 library is still considered by most to be pretty weak, but their online options comes free, and the Blue Ray comes standard, which are big pluses.

To me, I use a video game platform for video games, not movies, so I went with a 360, and then bought my entertainment system that I use for watching movies. For me, I know I would just get ****ed if the laser on whatever system I had went bad because I watched a movie on the thing (as was common with the Ps2 back in the day). If watching movies is more your thing, and you like having combo devices, the PS3 may be more the way for you to go. The biggest gaming advantage Ps3 has right now is the free on line play, but their library has made it hard for them to compete with X-Box live, although I will admit, it seems lately that PS3 is gaining some momentum.

The reason, I am only guessing here, as to why the XBox Live stuff has been on the fritz lately is because so many systems and live subscriptions were bought and activated over the Christmas season, that the XBox servers are just getting strained. Give MIcrosoft a couple of weeks, and I bet this problem will be in the past. This is a problem of popularity I think, not a cheap system or something like that. PS3 online won't be on the fritz at all because there is no where near as many people gaming online with that system as there are on Xbox Live. That's just my opinion though.

The capacity is the big difference.

I watched over the weekend a side by side. Maybe I was imagining it and maybe not, but I could tell a bit more crisp transitions in movement and clarity myself. HD was nice also. It would be a toss up to compare quality I guess for many. I just notice those things.

I also noticed a lag in HD play with the 360 this weekend. Could have been the projector too. It was a war game, can't remember the name of it, but there was a slight lag in aiming and firing. HDMI connected..

I think Blu-Ray is going to end up like Beta did back in the 80's. Poppy, I have been a Gran Tourismo fan since the first one came out, an I still own all of them. But, I don't think that any of them really compare to Forza or Forza 2. Forza is a much better game, and I love using the "triggers" for the throttle and brake.

The pricing scares me. I have no problem admitting that. to me it just seems silly. I have an upconvert DVD player that to me, looks awesome playing DVDs on my 1080 HD screen. With a HDMI cable, an Upconvert plays standard DVDs in 1080 resolution.

And I still pay less then $20 for a movie anywhere (even less when I go to Blockbuster or Hollwwood Video).

To me, right now, both the HD DVD and the Blu Ray make no sense. I've seen them both. I admit, they look good, but to pay $300 or whatever for a Blu-Ray player or HD DVD player and then $25 to $30 for a movie just makes no sense, when I can pay far less, and feel like I am not missing much at all quality wise. Maybe I am missing some minor details in a special affects flick, but even then, I'll take seeing King Kong on my system. I don't need to see it on Blu Ray or whatever. I didn't feel like I missed that much, and to be honest the movie blew anyway on both

I don't think I am gaining that much on comedies or dramas at all. Like I said, someone needs to convince this is worth the money, and so far I have seen nothing to convince me that is worth the extra money over an Upconvert.

Sounds like you'll be watching HD movies also...If that is a concern i'd definitely go with the PS3

gixxer: i'm not sure this time.....so far everything has been in bluray's favor....i think Warner's decision could be the deciding vote.....

by the way....now that i've gone HD....i don't ever wanna go back ;)

Add laser disc to that list  Remember when that was the "next big thing." Ya, see, I just think Blu Ray and HD DVD will be fads that will soon fade. Honestly, and be truly honest here, you have to know this to be true......Blu Ray would already be dead if it wasn't for the PS3. No one, and I mean no one was buying anything Blu Ray until the Ps3 came out. No one cared for the technology at all. Now, I think they only care because they have it on their Ps3.
