OT: BBQ Smokers

Thanks guys I went to Costco yesterday and I only saw the Traeger units there. For pellets I've been looking at Rec Tec, Blazin Grill, Smokey Mountain pellet grills, and the Yoder.

Smokers, The Green Egg, Primo units and the offset smoker Oklahoma Joe.

I still have my LifeTyme smoker mentioned in the earlier post and will continue to use it but I'm thinking about picking up a Big Green Egg too. My uncle has one and I like it a lot.

I have a large big green egg. I use it prob 3-4x a week... I cook almost eveything on it...

The pellet type Bradley/Traeger units are nice - being able to set it at a temperature and leave it is nice for some

I think some have issues with the Traegers - apparently they're now being made overseas.

I cook everything i can on the egg... Sear steaks at 700* or smoke some ribs at 220*...

Yep Costco smoker is very good the brand was Landmann. But after gaining 10lbs from all the tri tip I return it. Super easy to add wood and water

I'm a huge fan of a off set stick burner for larger cuts. Brisket, pork shoulders ect ect. For but for things like chicken, ribs, pork belly (bacon) I have a propane smoker that I use pellets or chips in a forget about it for a few hours.

I bought an Egg, its has now been a little more then a year. So far no regrets and have been using it at least once a week ever since. besides meat, It has worked out great for pizza, stuffed potatoes, nachos and a few other great snacks.

I'm still using my Grand Cafe. Since jabel's fix, it's putting our good food consistently. I am still considering getting a pellet grill but have not had good reason to pull the trigger. I will say that I'm not a fan of Traeger any more. They have moved production to China and many have reported rust issues. Also other brands have much better controllers. Traeger is known to have wide temp swings in comparison. If you got to go Chinese, the Green Mountain is the best bang for your buck.

Good thing about Costco is that if you do get the Traeger and have any issues in the future, you can return it for a full refund.

Greg... what about a nice smoker in a raffle one of these days? :lolspin:;)

I read this thread from the beginning. To think 5 years ago I was considering an electric smoker. What a difference half a decade makes! Glad that never came to fruition!

http://www.google.com/images?q=davy...p&ved=0CBoQsARqFQoTCMP3q5We2cYCFZQSkgod0aEJBw This model and a smoker, not sure still up in the air. Always comes down to money and how long it will last my grill is 20 years old.
That is a Green Mountain Grill. That is their portable model and very small (220 sq/in). The grill is only about 16- 17" long so you can't even cook a full slab without cutting in half or thirds. You might want to consider the Daniel Boone model.

Lowes carries a ceramic bbq/smoker/grill now that is somewhat cheaper than the egg.

The egg can smoke, sear, bake etc. something that the pellet type units cannot.

You can get a digital temp controller for the egg too. After 3 years of using the BGE I have found its not really needed though....

On an 8-10 hour cook I rarely have to readjust the vents.
