OT: Beef Recall, what are your thoughts?

Conversation is a little slow, so I figured I would throw this out there. What do you think of the beef recall and the Chino video? After 'Supersize Me', 'Fast Food Nation', and now this, are you considering changing your eating habits?

I eat mainly buffalo myself. If I do eat beef I only eat (buy) true range fed cattle from certain ranches. I do stoop to non "kosher" beef once in a while as I can't expect all the places I visit in the nation to have my higher standard of meats available. Buffalo is by far the best "beef" around though, both for you and the environment.

Got a link to the recall? I've been away on business and didn't catch the news for over a week.

Gresham, is there any place in particular you get your beef/Buffalo?

Edit: I just watched some slaughterhouse vids online. Now, I enjoy a good steak as much as the next guy, but the conditions some farm animals live in are worse than cruel. I think a big problem is that most people don't know the process the meat really goes through (how it lives and is killed, etc..) so nobody can really complain about it. I always pictured cows living in green pastures, only penned when they went to the slaughterhouse. Guess I was wrong.

I was shocked by the video footage I saw. The worst part is that they claimed they were recalling 140 tons of beef but that most of it was already consumed. If they got that on videotape imagine what goes on when the camera isn't rolling.

That's why I hunt my own game meat. That's also why I don't grudge vegans/vegetarians their choices.

Google for a video of kosher killings...
uhh that's more disturbing than regular SL house killings!

And since I have better odds of winning the lottery than death from beef, I'm gona keep on eating the good ole MOOO

None of shocks me anymore, I've delivered FROZEN chicken to a place here in CA. that only sells fresh chicken. Ca. oranges from bakersfield to florida to be reboxed and brought back to be sold as florida grown. You should the overseas containers loaded with cattle sitting around for a week before even getting loaded on a ship , mmmmmm good eats. I wonder if its possible the guys in the video could ever get in trouble from a foreman if they sidelined a head of beef because it was to sick to to walk into the killbox. I dont have to hunt down dinner , its all wrapped up real pretty for me at the store. Yes I still eat beef , just not the stuff in the plastic tube, no way ever!

And did you know vegetable's stunt your growth...? (lol)... Think about it, out of all the people who ever told you to "eat your vegetable's"!.... How Tall Were They???
I AM A MEATITARIAN! : )

That's it, I'm heading to the farm tomorrow and buying some chickens for the backyard! At least I'll know what I'm eating!

Just heard on the news that Costco pulled their beef also like the hamberger patties.

Okay, anyone know any butchers? I can learn how to hunt but I'm not about to clean a buffalo, elk, dear, etc around my house. maybe bring the butcher the food/animal and split the meat some how for his services...?

I used to hunt for most all of my own meat. When I started eating meat from the grocery store, I could taste a chemical flavor. It was pretty strong. Eventually i got used to it, but I remember vividly how strange the taste was.

I do not like eating any meat I didnt have a part in harvesting.

The morality aside, the question about what is been added scares me.

And the morality about the slaughterhouses, leads me to be even more scared of what those same sadists are willing to put into my food.

Hey Nuuze! I have never tried elf before (lol)... got any left in your freezer?
:D
My buddie's that hunt say elk is the best though!

I don't mean to pick on you Steve, but most people feel the same way that you do. I wasn't going to do this...but after that statement...I just can't resist. :D

The average doctor has less than three hours training in nutrition during medical school. As animal consumption goes down, so does death rates from basically everything you see your doctor for. Those areas in the world with the highest animal consumption have the lowest life expectancy. Even those groups with high mortality rates show a dramatic improvement when placed on a diet lower in animal products. This has been proven in both world wars.

Yale Medical Journal, "Of the three groups compared, meat-eating athletes showed far less endurance than sedentary vegetarians." The third group was vegetarian athletes. Guess where they scored? Every world-class endurance athlete is a vegan. Running, biking, swimming, most Olympic sports. It is considered normal in their circles. Few use whey protein to help recovery, but not many.

Cholesterol and saturated fat...just know that 'healthy' is the average American. It does not really mean healthy. It means 'normal.' Remember a 'normal' American is considered morbidly obese by most of the world.

"A vegetarian diet can prevent 97% of our coronary occlusions..." Journal of American Medical Association

Meat, eggs, and dairy have been linked to cancer of the prostate, colon, breast, cervix, and ovaries. Even smokers on a veg diet have lower rates of lung cancer. As part of treatment recovering from cancer and to prevent reoccurrence, private groups will put patients on a vegan diet.

Meat, eggs, and dairy have also been linked to:

diabetes, hypoglycemia, multiple sclerosis, ulcers, intestinal problems, arthritis, kidney stones, gall stones, hypertension, anemia, and even asthma.

All these studies were done in the 70s-80s. However the meat, egg, and dairy lobbies have convinced Congress that it isn't the food. All of your medical research government entities keep putting out the same info, animal products are bad. Congress votes to keep pumping billions into drug research. In the end, all we have to do is reduce (or not eat) our animal intake.

60% of the gas used in America is used to support the meat, egg, and dairy industry and your consumption of it. That big hole in the Gulf of Mexico where your corals used to come from is mainly due to growing corn to feed cattle and produce high fructose corn syrup.

1.5 million died last year from diet related medical complications. The federal government spent close to 700 billion on medical costs for preventable diseases, in a year. And some complain that we are spending too much in Iraq.

I could go on and on. And I'm not even a vegetarian/vegan, although I'm working on it. I just can't give up the Chipotle yet. I guarantee my future kids will be. I think most of you would be amazed at the foods that are vegan these days. Ice 'cream', 'milk', etc. Good stuff too.

So...still thinking that statement is true? :D

Suggested reading: Diet for a New America by John Robbins, 1987. (It is a great start...) Read Part 1 last. It concerns the morality involved and the methods used to raise food. Depending on you, it could really slant your view on the author and the book and you'll miss the good info in the rest of the book.

Funny, most vegans I know tend to get sick quite often and are the frailest of people I know. I tried it with the help of a very talented nutrionist and my body really did not like it. That is why I choose the healthier of meats. Buffalo and range fed beef are leaps and bounds better then grain fed lot cattle. There is just no comparisn. All the above studies where done on grain fed lot cattle so take them with much biase.

Just how does the fat required for brain function come to be on a vegan diet? Just where does the natural fatty acids come from? Some suppliment? Funny how in order to be a vegan you need to use suppliments to even be healthy ;)

Anyone else ever thought it strange that a person would define who they are in a society solely on their choice of diet?

Moral or social issues factored into the decision are fine and all, but to set yourself apart from society and declare your particular diet as a badge of honor.

Lactose intolerant, I guess is based on a medical condition and would need to be made distinct.

Vegan rings too much of someone who likes to debate for the sake of debate. They want to be diferent than everyone else and use this as a means of showing their seperation.

I swear to God, I think if everyone else went vegan, drove a Prius and managed to stop Global climate change, the current vegan-enviromentalists would listen to heavy metal music, eat only raw flesh and drive SUV's just so they could still have something to argue about.

With regard to the original topic of this thread... I'm not overly concerned about the recall. What a lot of people are missing is that it was done as a precautionary measure. This particular slaughter house was caught doing something it shouldn't have been - mistreating the animals. This prompted the recall and investigations to determine IF they're doing anything else against regulations.

These types of audits and recalls happen all the time in the food industry. Granted they usually aren't as massive as this one. The system is in place to protect us and it works pretty well considering the volume of food produced/consumed vs. the number of serious food-related health incidents.

The media is doing what it does best - planting the seed of fear. Now people are talking about not eating beef all of a sudden, and how shocked they are about how/where it comes from. So if that's the issue fine, to each his own. I don't see any health concerns at this point.

Regarding the vegan comments above... Pro-vegans will find stats to support their side, pro-carnivores/omnivores will find stats to support their side. There's no reason you can't eat meat and be healthy, low fat intake, lots of protein and carbs = high energy for those "endurance" sports. Balanced diet is the way to go! :)

haha. good discussion. I just think we should stick to opinions, and not so much who's right or wrong. I enjoy a salad before a good steak. that doesn't change who we are. IMO, bacteria and germs build our immune system, so someone that NEVER introduced any into their body probably would be in bad shape once they do get sick.

I saw a quick clip of some cows being pushed around with a forklift, very disturbing. Americans will never stop eating beef. Cows should be treated better than that.

Maybe I missed something in the news story, but is the recall because of inhumane treatment or an actual public health threat from contaminated beef? Just wondering...
