thanks all for the input. Well i went over to the house today to drop off the 225g and looked at the fire place. Well the little fake wood block are there and it runs on Natural gas like i said before. i look up the chimeney and there is washer manchine dryer tube that goes up all the way to the top of the chimeny. so it does vent the hot air up. i read on a website to turn the chimmeny on and leave it on for 1-2 hrs and to tape a thermometer you can see if the temp goes up
This talk is cool but also funny at times. The TV being mounted on the wall above the fireplace would never be a problem. If the fire place does not pill the paint off your walls when it is on you will have not problem. Your TV is putting out so much heat to make Plasmas and LCD's look good. I have a 50" over my fire place and run my fire place all the time no problem. I also have one in my TV room/game room on the wall and it is just as hot at times when the kids play games for an hour.
im gona test it out this week. i am going to tape a thermometer on the wall and turn the fire place for 1-2 hrs and see if the wall gets warm. Also above the mantle. Good thing winter is almost done and over with
We have our above the fireplace in the family room for about 1 1/2 yrs now with no problem but we rarely use our fireplace. been in california an all.. You should be fine.. just my .02
From a design perspective, I wouldn't place a TV above a fireplace unless there is absolutely no choice. The fireplace should be a focal point and having a TV above conflicts with that.
I have my 52" LCD about a 1 1/2' above my fireplace. Gas fireplace with fake wood. Most of the heat is vented so when I actually have it on, it doesn't get super hot. Didn't have any problems with it, but I do recommend a tilt bracket.

Just wanted to add here is a picture of the fireplace i plan to put the tv on. Also note that the painting on the wall is 52' inches diagonal. just imagine its a widescreen. hehehe
